National Gardening Month manager Debbie Pascoe is on hand to give you the lowdown on the first National Gardening Month kicking off this October!

This ambitious project establishes an annual month-long nationwide celebration of gardening in retail stores and in the media.

Great to recognise the careers of those who helped shape NZ landscaping today!

Chris Goom, early 1980s, on the tools at Canterbury Landscapes, the business he started with his wife Jill in 1981. What began with Chris on the tractor and Jill running the office grew into something that shaped a generation of Canterbury landscapers, many of whom are Accredited Registered Master Landscapers today.

He surrounded himself with people who were good at what he was not, mentored designers and apprentices who have gone on to run successful businesses of their own, and was a founding member of the Canterbury RML group at a time when the industry needed a stronger voice.

The business has stayed in the family. His son Tim bought him out and renamed it Goom Landscapes, with daughter Sarah and daughter-in-law Rachel alongside him. Grandson Caleb won Young Landscaper of the Year in 2023.

In 2024 Chris received a Legacy Award, one of the first three ever presented, in recognition of a career spent building, mentoring and advocating for this industry.

The NZPPI Board has released an industry discussion document exploring the future of sustainable industry good funding for New Zealand's plant production sector.

In May 2026, the Board held a workshop in Wellington with producer members, followed by a session led by Chair Nick Hoskins at the NZ Plant Producers Conference in Auckland on 20 May. At both events, the idea of a levy was discussed openly and received broad support in principle.

Please note - a levy is not being proposed at this stage. Based on the support received so far, the Board is exploring in more detail how a levy model could provide a stable, equitable and sustainable funding base for the industry's work going forward.

Those who attended the Plastics Recycling session at our NZ Plant Producers Conference this year had a first glimpse of Agrecovery's new user-pays rural collection and recycling trial for bulk used rigid plastic pot and trays.

This trial is a fantastic first step for plant producers to manage their plastic waste sustainably and was strongly supported by conference participants.

🌱 What an incredible two days in Auckland! 🌿

A huge thank you to the 170 members, sponsors and industry partners who joined us at the NZ Plant Producers Conference & Awards. From inspiring field trips and thought-provoking presentations to a fantastic social programme and industry awards night — it was two days full of connection, ideas and celebration.

This year's event held a little extra magic. We marked 10 years of NZPPI and more than a century of our incredible industry — a chance to reflect on our journey, honour those who built it, and celebrate the next generation carrying it forward.

The energy in the room was something special. The excitement about what comes next for our industry is real. 🌳✨
