Iran executes January protest detainees Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saeedi

Hengaw – Tuesday, June 16, 2026

The Iranian Judiciary has executed Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saeedi, two men arrested in connection with the January protests, amid a continuing surge in political executions and the authorities’ ongoing campaign of reprisals against protesters.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the executions of Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saeedi were carried out in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Shahroud Central Prison in Semnan Province. The executions were announced by Mizan News Agency, the official media outlet of the Iranian Judiciary.

The two men were arrested by government forces in Shahroud during the January protests and were later transferred to the city's prison after undergoing intensive interrogations in security detention facilities.

In a joint case, the Iranian Judiciary charged the two protesters with “waging war against God” (moharebeh), “corruption on earth” (efsad-e fel-arz), “use of weapons,” “destruction of public property,” and “acting against internal security.” They were subsequently sentenced to death by a branch of the Revolutionary Court.

Despite official claims that the case proceeded through the legal process, such death sentences are routinely issued and carried out within a deeply opaque judicial system marked by closed-door proceedings, denial of access to independent legal counsel, and reliance on forced confessions extracted under severe physical and psychological torture.

We stand in solidarity with the women of Herat and across Afghanistan in their courageous struggle for freedom, dignity, education, and equal rights. We call on governments, international institutions, and human rights organisations to condemn the Taliban’s gender apartheid regime, break the silence, and take meaningful action to hold it accountable through diplomatic pressure, international legal mechanisms, and sustained support for Afghan women-led movements. The world must not normalise or legitimise gender apartheid.

Women’s Rights Are Human Rights

Stand With Afghan Women

End Gender Apartheid

Today we mourn the loss of Marjane Satrapi, a remarkable writer, artist, filmmaker, and fearless voice for freedom whose work touched millions around the world.

Through her groundbreaking graphic memoir Persepolis and her other works, including Persepolis 2, Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and Woman, Life, Freedom, Satrapi brought the stories of ordinary Iranians to a global audience with honesty, courage, humour, and humanity. She challenged simplistic narratives about Iran and showed the world the richness, complexity, and resilience of Iranian society.

Satrapi was more than an author. She was an outspoken advocate for human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression. She used her platform to stand with those facing repression and injustice, and she never stopped speaking out against authoritarianism. Her work inspired generations of readers to look beyond stereotypes and to recognise the shared humanity of people living under oppression.

On 4 June 2026, Marjane Satrapi died at the age of 56. According to her family, she passed away after a period of profound grief following the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa, a loss from which she never fully recovered.

Her passing is a profound loss, but her legacy lives on in her art, her words, and the courage she inspired in others. Through her books, her activism, and her unwavering commitment to justice, she ensured that the voices of Iranians fighting for freedom would be heard around the world.

Rest in power, Marjane Satrapi.
