KETE has been taking part in Plastic Free July: “a shared global movement that helps millions of people reduce plastic waste through simple, everyday choices and be part of the solution to plastic pollution.”

Over 5600 people from around the world have made a pledge this month to choose one plastic item to refuse - from single-use cups to plastic bottles or packaged produce.

Locally, reducing plastic waste helps to keep the Porirua harbour clean, and birdlife safe!

Bring your whānau and friends - whether your age is 5, 15, or 50… all are welcome to show up, even if it’s just to kōrero / chat !

Where: 470 Takapū Rd

Bing: enclosed shoes/gumboots, water, lunch, and weather-appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy!

One of our awesome KETE members has been involved with something very exciting…

“In February, I got the opportunity to go on a kiwi release, near Mākara. My friend Craig works for Toyota who sponsor Capital Kiwi.

We released five kiwis, and I got to hold one before we placed it in a box that they stay in until night. The kiwi was very soft and weighed about a kilogram.

It was such an amazing experience, I feel very lucky to have had that opportunity.“

Community Planting Day - all welcome!!

Saturday 16th May
Come and go as you please between 9:30 and 3:30pm
It’s helpful to attend one of the briefings either at 9.30am or 12.30pm.

Getting there: Follow Takapu Road toward the Takapu Road Substation and look out for KETE signs/flags.

What to bring:
Gumboots if they have them (we are planting around a wetland), or older enclosed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty
Warm clothes
Hat
Lunch, snacks and water
Raincoat
Gardening gloves if you have them
Any medication you may need

As part of the City Nature Challenge, KETE is striving to identify as many local species as we can using iNaturalist!

iNaturalist is a free app that allows you to identify plants and animals from a photo. The data is collected for biodiversity and conservation research. Be a part of the team for the City Nature Challenge by joining and adding your findings to the collection!

During the school holidays, students from Tawa schools came together to practise using iNaturalist. Identifying the species allowed us to research more about life in Tawa!
