Lowering the voting age for local elections makes sense. It gives young people the opportunity to vote for the first time while they’re still at school and part of a stable community they know and care about.

Right now, many people cast their first vote between 18 and 20 years old—often after leaving school, moving cities, or starting work or study in a new place. They may feel less connected to their new community and less motivated to participate in local elections. On top of that, they may have forgotten what they learned about voting, as civics education in Aotearoa generally only goes up to year 10—when most students are around 16 years old.
Allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to vote means they can take part while they’re still engaged in civics education. It makes learning about democracy practical and meaningful, empowering students to put their knowledge into action and make informed decisions about their communities.

👉Over 100,000 16 and 17-year-olds paid $126 million in income tax in 2023 alone. That’s almost three quarters of all 16 and 17-year-olds in New Zealand that pay income tax. Yet they don’t have a say in where this money goes*

To be clear, we’re not saying you should have to pay tax to vote. Voting is a right, not something you should have to earn. But too often, people say young people don’t contribute. When in reality, they already pay a huge amount. It’s only fair that they have a say.

Make the pledge, support lowering the voting age 🗳️🧡

The government won’t be reading any submissions made to lower the voting age ⁉️ swipe to read more ➡️

Kia kaha 🧡 we appreciate everyone of you who have supported us through every step of this journey. The fight isn’t over till we say it’s over!!

Post text reads: The government doesn’t want to hear anyone’s views on lowering the voting age.

The government has decided to stop the process of our Bill. This means all 730+ submissions won’t be read or considered. Not to mention all the submissions that’s weren’t made through our website!!

It’s disheartening to know that the government won’t take the time to listen and consider these important submissions of our stories and reasons.

Our democracy thrives when all voices are acknowledge, not when they’re swept under the rug.

We thank everyone who took the time to write a submission, your support means so much to us! If only it meant as much to the new government.

730+ stories.
730+ submissions.
730+ voices.

We promise to continue to fight for this change.
