Your Backyard Can Make a Big Difference

Predators don’t just live in the bush — they’re in our gardens, compost bins, sheds and fences. That’s why backyard trapping is one of the most effective ways to protect native wildlife.

Across Waikanae, residents have already removed thousands of pests, helping create safer nesting sites and healthier bush.

Join us at the Open Day on Saturday 30 May to hear the results so far and see how easy it is to start trapping at home.

Every rat we catch makes room for more of the birds we love — pīwakawaka, kererū, ruru and titipounamu.

Predator Free Waikanae is a community project working to reduce rats, stoats and other predators so our native species can return, nest and thrive.

Since launching, locals have reported over 2,250 catches, helping create safer backyards and healthier bush across Waikanae.

Come along to our Open Day on Saturday 30 May at Parkwood Retirement Village between 10am and 12.30pm. Grab a free trap, and help bring the birds back. Your contribution to a predator-free Waikanae will make a positive difference.
