Aongatete Forest Project We are a volunteer group that manages 500 hectares of native forest in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park, between Tauranga and Katikati.

Aongatete Forest Restoration Trust was established in 2006 by Tauranga Forest and Bird and the Katikati Rotary Club and is supported by local volunteers, Forest and Bird members, landowners and Ngai Tamawhariua who have the kaitiaki (guardianship) role over this forest. Our incredible volunteers and supporters are focused on restoring forest, birds and invertebrates. To do this we have an extensiv

e network of traps and bait stations that are maintained year-round to target most of the introduced pest species.

There have been many comments from volunteers about the amount of new growth in the forest this summer - all that rain in January has had a silver lining. It’s certainly benefited our reveg planting done in August last year, growth rates have been spectacular. The shot below shows a very bonny mak...

Pest plants are, in many ways, just as big a threat to our native ecosystems as animal predators. Get along to this free workshop in Katikati on Saturday if you'd like to learn about the best control methods. It's extraordinarily satisfying to get hands-on with w**d removal! Look at these marvellous volunteers that came gloved up and spade-ready for the third stage of our paddock restoration this morning. Approx 450 native trees went into the ground, from revegetation species like manuka, makomako and mahoe to some beaut succession species including puriri and totara. The plant guards are a necessary accessory to keep the bunnies and hares from enjoying a buffet at our expense.

There were some absolutely delicious sausages and home baking to replenish energy levels afterwards too. Cheers to our supporters Kaimai Environmental & Project Parore

VOLUNTEER EVENT REMINDER: planting in the kohanga paddock, tomorrow Saturday 2nd August. The weather is looking brilliant (although it will be a tad chilly) so bring your beanie, gloves and a spade to help us get 400 native seedlings into the ground. Start time is 9am.

Cheers to Josh and Kaimai Enviromental, who are donating all the plants AND slinging sausages on the BBQ for post-planting refreshment!
