LOCATED IN TARANAKI. POSTING ON BEHALF - YOGI needs a new home. We have not met Yogi, but this is what his mum says about him:

"We’re needing to rehome our much-loved dog Yogi and are looking for the right home for our sweet but sensitive boy where he can thrive. Yogi is a medium-sized neutered Retriever x Poodle x King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, turning 5 in June. He’s smart, affectionate and loves fetch, tug and cuddles once he knows you.

He's crate trained, comfortable being left at home for a time, can use a dog door and is very food motivated so trainable.

But you should know that Yogi is also a sensitive soul which can come with some challenges. He is reactive to dogs on lead or behind a fence because he's nervous, although does well with calm, gradual introductions to neutral dogs. He's previously showed resource guarding with high-value chews (managed by avoiding these) and will alert bark. He hasn't had a lot of exposure to children or spent time around cats. We’ve worked with a professional behaviourist and would be happy to support transition training for him to settle into his new home.

This is incredibly tough for us. Yogi is the sweetest dog who just needs the right environment to shine.
If you think this could be with you please get in touch with [email protected]"

ADOPTED!!!

LOCATED IN WELLINGTON. COMMUNITY REHOME on behalf of Indie's carer. Pretty Indie has been passed around in her 4 years of life and the only person who actually loves and wants her, can't because she already has the legal limit of dogs. We have not met mixed breed Indie, but we have been told that she is a sweet and affectionate dog. Probably best in a home without cats as she did apparently chase a cat!

Indie was spayed this week and has been vaccinated. Please email her carer for more information. [email protected]

STOP THE PRESS...🐾

Lucy has officially found her forever home 💜

We had the privilege of working with her for 12 weeks, supporting her journey with ARAN Animal Rescue NZ - completely pro-bono -helping her build the skills and confidence she needed to step into this next chapter.

A massive thank you to Jovanna for giving Lucy the home she truly deserves. This is what it’s all about.

And even better… I’m hearing Lucy has already been an absolute superstar at dog training this week. That’s the kind of update that makes you smile.

It’s a lovely reminder that when we focus on calm, connection, and understanding, we’re not just training for the moment—we’re giving dogs something solid to carry forward into their new lives.

So sweet 🥰. Let's all share a mindful moment today with the animals in our lives.

Last Tuesday evening I was sitting on the back step watching the last of the autumn light fade behind the Kaitake Ranges here in Taranaki, mind somewhere completely else — to-do lists, emails, the usual noise. Maggie came and sat beside me, nudged my hand once with her nose, then looked up at me.

Not a demanding look. Not the 'feed me' look or the 'let's go' look. This was the other one. The quiet, steady one that she seems to save for moments when I need it most.

I held her gaze for a moment and felt my whole chest loosen.

There is real science behind what happens when you make genuine, soft eye contact with your dog. In 2015, a landmark Japanese study published in Science found that mutual gazing between dogs and their owners triggers a significant oxytocin release in both species — the same bonding hormone that flows between human parents and infants. Your dog is not just looking at you. They are chemically bonding with you, in real time.

But here's what the research doesn't fully capture: the quality of presence you bring to that moment matters. There's a difference between glancing at your dog while you scroll your phone and genuinely pausing, softening your face, and meeting their gaze with your full attention. Dogs are extraordinarily sensitive to this difference. Maggie always knows.

In my work with dogs and their people across Taranaki, I see so many owners who are physically present with their dog but mentally somewhere else entirely. The dog feels it. They get restless, or clingy, or they start acting out for attention. What they're asking for isn't more exercise or stricter boundaries — often they just want you to actually show up.

Try this today: Set a timer for two minutes. Sit quietly with your dog. Soften your eyes, relax your face, and hold a gentle gaze with them. No phones, no TV. Just you and your dog and the moment you're both in. Notice what happens in your body. Notice what happens in theirs.

Two minutes. It costs nothing and it means everything to them.

Have you had one of those wordless moments with your dog that felt genuinely connecting? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 👇

UPDATE: Please no more applications for now. We have more than enough and it is taking time to go through them and process them all. HOBI Needs Help. This is a commuity rehome post. We have not met Hobi and are posting on behalf of his carers.

Located in the Kapiti area, Hobi is a beautiful large Bearded Collie (weighs over 30 kg) , six years old with special needs. This is what his carer says about him: "Hobi is a highly trainable dog. He is a very social dog, loves peoples affection and cuddles. He gets on with other dogs, just loves to play especially with balls and soft toys! Hobi would suit a large lifestyle property. He doesn't like cats but I'm sure, if a home had a cat, he would easily get used to it/them.

Hobi is very anxious about being left alone. He spins very fast trying to catch his tail to bite it when he's upset and when he eats his food. There are certain triggers that set him off to spin and chase his tail and he can hurt himself by biting his tail. He really needs someone home with him or other dogs around him as much as possible. I believe this would ease a lot of his anxiousness.

He will need help with his anxieties and and would need a patient approach to begin with. He is currently on a medication for this which helps him to settle. Health notes available if requested. Hobi is desexed and vaccinated.

Hobi would be best suited in a home with experienced dog owners, who have the time & knowledge to give him and target exercise & enrichment that he needs. A family would be perfect and/or other dogs as well.

Please share! If you would like more information please email [email protected]

NORTHLAND people, please see "Diesel", currently in the care of Kaipara District Council. If you can help this lovely dog please click on the link!

Diesel has passed both his veterinary check and behaviour assessment, and he is truly a gentle, affectionate soul.

We believe Diesel has had a difficult start to life, and as a result, the world can still feel overwhelming for him at times. He may be a little nervous in new environments, but once he learns that people bring kindness, treats, and cuddles, his confidence grows quickly and his happy tail soon starts wagging. He is very food-motivated, which makes him responsive to training, and he is okay around other dogs. Diesel already knows how to sit and is manageable on lead.
We believe Diesel will truly thrive with a patient and understanding person in a calm, stable home. With the right support, time, and positive reinforcement, he has every opportunity to build his confidence and finally experience the love and consistency he has been missing.
If you can give Diesel a supportive and loving home, please follow the link provided for our Expression of Interest form https://www.kaipara.govt.nz/adopt-a-dog

WHAT IF YOUR DOG COULD TRULY SETTLE?
JOIN OUR Six lesson course, 1 every week. - $195
Not just “sit” for a treat. Not just “stay” for a few seconds. But genuinely relax while life happens around them.
This course is designed for real families, real dogs, and real situations.
We’ll guide you through the foundations of clicker training — capturing calm, shaping behaviour, and building clarity — in a way that feels natural, kind, and deeply effective. From there, we build the skill that changes everything: your dog learning to go to their bed, stay there, and choose calm.
Not because they’re told… but because they understand.
You’ll learn how to gently grow duration, distance, and distraction so your dog can:
Settle while the kids get ready for school
Stay relaxed when visitors arrive
Rest calmly at a café while you enjoy a coffee ☕
Switch off instead of constantly being “on”
This isn’t about control. It’s about communication.
It’s about giving your dog clarity, confidence, and the ability to regulate themselves in a busy human world.
Because when a dog can be calm… everything else becomes easier.

Book you space here :
🐾 $195 for the full 6-week block, lesson 1 hour long.

💬 'Why small group instead of a big class?'

After 20 years of running classes and workshops in New Zeland and the UK, we are please to announce our first class in the Taranaki

My 6-week classes here in Taranaki are small by design. Because when the group is small:

✦ Your dog gets to actually focus

✦ You get real attention and feedback — not just general advice

✦ The learning sticks, because it's built on your dog's pace, not the group average

We cover clicker training, the Place command, and calm general obedience — and I walk you through every piece of it until it makes sense for YOU and YOUR dog.

$195 for the full 6-week block. Classes held at Hounds Hangout Doggy Daycare in New Plymouth.

Starting soon 27th May 6:30pm. Spaces are limited.
