Re-Source works at the intersection of community need and resource recovery,
combining targeted support with practical waste minimisation.

We work with a wide network of community organisations across Hawke's Bay, and everything we take in goes to meet a real, current need of a person, family, or a community service. That does mean there are times we cannot accept a particular item. Clothing is the usual one, because there is so much of it in the community already and the referrals we are filling call for the plain and simple and we only need the sizes we are running low on at the time.

Here're some examples of how you can help:

Lovely, non-essential items we can use for fundraising to keep the service running

Our 29 October workshop at Heretaunga Women's Centre has sold out of sewing places. There are still a few spectator places if you'd like to come and watch, have a cuppa and see what it's all about before you jump in and try it for yourself.

There are still sewing and spectator places at Camberley Community Centre on Thursday 15 October, so grab a spot while you can.

Don't worry if you don't have an item or fabric to bring, or you're nervous about cutting into something precious. We'll have material for you to work on, and our Re-Sew volunteers will be alongside you the whole way.

A big thank you to Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga Waste Minimisation Grant for making this possible. We are so excited to get it up and running!

More supplies are on the way, and they are much bigger than these!

Now that we have the right range and type of supplies, we will do our best to top them up from donations but there's always a cost for sanding. So please think of Re-Source when you are next tidying the shed or garage.

We are careful to preserve the anonymity of the people we support which means we can rarely share the details behind the work we do. We are sharing some of the feedback we receive as a thank you for your support of people you do not know, and whose stories you will will never hear. You have our eternal gratitude 💚

A huge thank you to Havelock North Tennis Club for donating in the order of 200 tennis balls, 5 rackets and a net! Rather than going to waste, they've been divided between 8 groups in our network. Four te kōhanga reo, a kindergarten, two schools and Sport Hawke's Bay were all delighted to receive a share.

It was an absolute pleasure to provide this service to the Club, so they can continue getting ready for Love Tennis while making sure their surplus items are making a difference in the community.

We made extra good use of the trip too, including extra donations that we had ready to share with these groups. And a bag of Christmas art and craft supplies went to Heretaunga Women's Centre for one of their wonderful programmes. We dropped off some teaspoons too because so many of the Re-Source crew have appreciated a cuppa at Heretaunga Women's centre over the years 💚

This what a resource recovery hub does. Good things come in, we find the people and groups who need them, and one trip does the work of six.

Yes, we really are asking. And no, it's not for us.

Every emergency pack we send out goes to someone a frontline worker has identified as needing immediate assistance. Toiletries, the basics, and a fresh pair of underwear, because that is the very minimum dignity someone requires.

It's the one thing we can't pass on second-hand and we don't have many new pairs donated so if we have a little spare in the pot we purchase more when we can.

You can help us keep the packs full. We are short of new underwear (in packaging): ladies' in all sizes and men's in size Large. Drop us a line for more info, or become a Re-Source Guardian and we will do the shopping ourselves, so we can purchase the sizes we need, when they are needed.

Clearing out the shed? Half tins of paint, varnish and wood oils are exactly what Brian needs to bring donated furniture back to life for the community.

Downsizing, deceased estates and house moves turn up plenty of half-used tins. Don't let them go to waste. We use them in our furniture restoration programme, and so do some of the services on our network.

Tins need to be in excellent condition: not lumpy, dry or contaminated. If it's still good enough to use in your own home, it's good enough for us.

The rocking chair in a recent post went to an elderly person in our community, and we have families waiting now for the furniture in the repair queue. Every tin, brush, pot of glue and tin of screws helps it move forward.

A referral came in at 12.15 on Friday afternoon, Stacey had itready for collection within an hour. We can't always be this speedy but when we can, we go hard.

After a distressing period in their life, this person didn't have clothes of their own. They had been borrowing from someone of a different gender. Nothing fitted and nothing felt right. Now they have clothes, toiletries and other supplies that are solely theirs.

Much more support is needed to get this person back to where they should be, and services are moving into place to provide it. But in the moment, when a frontline worker identifies a critical need like this, the community needs a nimble, responsive service that can provide what is needed right away, while the larger organisations take on the ongoing care. That is where Re-Source fits.
