Vanakam/Namaste,
Sri Ganesha Temple Christchurch is happy to present A 9-Week Introductory Series on the Lalitha Sahasranama, starting Sunday, October 11 (First Day of Navarathri) from 10:30-11:30 am and we welcome devotees to attend the sessions and benefit of understanding the Devi Namas.

The Lalithā Sahasranāma — one thousand names of Lalithā Tripurasundarī , the Divine Mother — is among the most cherished devotional texts in the Hindu tradition. Many people chant it regularly as a prayer, but the Sahasranāma is much more than that. Its names contain deep teachings about the Divine Mother, the human mind, consciousness, Śiva and Śakti, the Śrīchakra, devotion and liberation.

This 9-week series will explore selected names and the ideas they carry, in simple English. No previous knowledge of the Lalitā Sahasranāma, Ta**ra, Śrīvidyā, Hindu philosophy or Sanskrit is required. Everyone is welcome.

What Will We Explore?
Through selected names, the series will address questions such as: Who is Lalitā, and why is God worshipped as Mother? What do Śiva and Śakti represent? What is the Śrīchakra, and what do Lalitā's noose, goad, bow and arrows mean? What are Kuṇḍalinī and the chakras? Why is Lalitā described both as a beautiful Goddess and as formless consciousness? And how can devotion lead to spiritual freedom?

Why Chant the Lalithā Sahasranāma?
Regular chanting can become a simple but powerful spiritual practice. It can help calm and focus the mind, develop devotion and a sense of closeness to the Divine Mother, reduce fear, anxiety and excessive attachment, and bring a feeling of peace and inner strength. When we understand the meaning of the names, chanting becomes much richer — instead of merely repeating words, we begin to reflect on what they tell us about ourselves and about the Divine.

Important Note
This is a series for study, reflection and devotion. It does not involve initiation into Śrīvidyā or the teaching of secret or restricted Ta***ic practices.

About the Speaker
The series will be led by Dr V. Nilakant, a retired Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury. He has just completed a series on the Bhagavad Gita at our temple. He is a Tamil-speaking South Indian who grew up in New Delhi, India. Wherever possible, he will translate the English version into Hindi/Tamil.
