A challenging time in recent days for our emergency services across the North Island. Weather events can be very unpredictable and dangerous. Challenging rescue conditions.

We have to acknowledge those families who have loved ones that remain missing in Warkworth and the Bay of Plenty. These are tragic circumstances and a true reminder of how life can change so very quickly and the volatility of nature itself. Our brigade and our community will have you all in our thoughts.

FIREWORKS INCIDENT IN TUAKAU🔥🔥🔥🔥

Tuakau Volunteer Fire Brigade is urging the community to take extra care with fireworks this Guy Fawkes Day, following a house fire in residential Tuakau last night caused by a firework landing on a roof.

Brigade crews from Tuakau woth assistance from Pokeno responded promptly to reports of smoke coming from the property and were able to contain the blaze to the roof void, preventing further spread to the remainder of the home.

The resident has given permission for photographs of the incident to be shared to raise public awareness of the risks associated with fireworks near buildings and dry materials. We appreciate you helping us raise awareness

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Ben Wilson said the incident serves as a timely reminder about the importance of fire safety and responsible fireworks use.

“Fireworks can be unpredictable, and when used near homes, trees, or dry vegetation, the risk of fire increases dramatically,” Mr Wilson said.
“We’re fortunate that this fire was contained quickly — but it could easily have been much worse.”

The Tuakau Volunteer Fire Brigade encourages everyone celebrating Guy Fawkes Day to follow these safety steps:

Use fireworks well away from houses, trees, and dry grass.

Clear gutters and roofs of leaves and debris before lighting fireworks.

Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby at all times.

Ensure working smoke alarms are installed in every home.

If a fire starts, call 111 immediately.

The brigade also acknowledged the swift actions of the homeowner.

“Tuakau firefighters are on call 24/7 to protect our community, we simply ask that everyone take care so we don’t see more preventable fires like this one.”

🚨Multi-Level Homes Need Multi-Level Protection 🚨

Did you know that multi-level homes pose a much higher risk in the event of a fire?
In recent years, there have been multiple fatalities in New Zealand in houses without enough working smoke alarms.

If you or someone you know lives in a two-storey or multi-level home, it’s critical to have as much early warning as possible. Smoke alarms save lives — but only when they’re installed and working.

The Tuakau Volunteer Fire Brigade is offering FREE Home Fire Safety Visits, including the installation of free smoke alarms.
Our goal is simple: to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

A great turnout from the Tuakau community to remember those who fought for our freedom. Young and old came to pay their respects and take part in proceedings which was great to see. Our brigade took part in the march, and this years ANZAC service had our own Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Ben Wilson, as the Master of Ceremonies.

A real sense of community spirit seeing so many taking time out to honour the heroes that faced challenges most of us could never imagine.

We will remember them.

This will include Tuakau and the old Franklin district.

Police is seeking witnesses to a series of scrub fires across Port Waikato and Tuakau this year.

Counties Manukau South CIB are investigating seven fires that have been deemed suspicious.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Taylor says this series fires first began in January this year.

“Police are working with Fire and Emergency New Zealand to understand the scope of the series of fires,” he says.

“We will consider all investigative opportunities to hold those responsible to account.

“At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to whether these fires are linked or not.”

There were five suspicious fires that occurred in February alone.

Detective Senior Sergeant Taylor says it is fortunate there have been no injuries or loss of life as a result.

No arrests have been made at this stage of the investigation.

“The dry weather, and at times proximity to the Port Waikato township, causes significant concern and risk for the township,” Detective Senior Sergeant Taylor says.

Police urge anyone with information about those involved, or who have witnessed suspicious activity surround the time fires occurred, to report this.

You can update Police online now or call 105 using the reference number 250227/2905.

“If you see any suspicious activity occurring, please call Police on 111,” Detective Senior Sergeant Taylor says.
