Kids Greening Taupo

Kids Greening Taupo Connecting tamariki with nature today to create the kaitiaki of the future. 💚 Mai i te kōpae ki te urupā, e tātou ako tonu ai.

Kids Greening Taupō is an environmental education programme connecting tamariki with nature. The programme uses the work of Greening Taupō and Predator Free Taupō as an authentic learning context for local youth. Greening Taupō is a community organisation which aims to increase the native flora and fauna of the town for the benefit of its people, businesses and natural environment. Kids Greening T

aupō provides the link between local schools/ECE centres and Greening Taupō, enabling students to be actively involved with projects to increase biodiversity and to solve environmental problems. From the cradle to the grave, we are forever learning.

🐀 🪤 Trap building at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College! ! 🐭 🪤 This awesome class sets a trapline each year and monitors it regularly. They had a session from our coordinator about the history of the biodiversity crisis in Aotearoa, then they made and set tracking tunnels to monitor what was around the riverside, now they've built traps with Predator Free Taupo to set up their trapline. We can't wait to see how they go. 👏

🌿 It starts with nature connection! 💚 As David Attenborough has said, "No one will care about what they have never experienced..." So, for us, the first step in conservation is to connect our tamariki with nature, and that's what Heidi was doing with Tauhara Primary School, Taupo new entrants last week in their local gully space. Did you know that we have over 50 free nature scavenger hunts on our website? Most of them are also available in te reo Māori! Check them out and get exploring!, 💚🌿 https://www.kidsgreeningtaupo.org.nz/scavenger-hunts

We are incredibly grateful for Contact Energy and Grassroots Trust Central’s generous support in funding Heidi's Coordinator role working with Early Childhood Education centres across our community. Together, we are creating opportunities for children to build lifelong connections with nature and develop a sense of responsibility for the world around them.

😍 Adding to the natural regeneration in the Taupo Intermediate School gully with some native ferns was exciting. 🌿🌱 Only a few years ago this spot was a w**d infested area that you couldn't get into, with jasmine covering the 50 year old trees. After removing it all the earth was bare, but the subcanopy is now flourishing! Check out the before photo from 2021!

😍We LOVE hearing that the learning has carried on in class after we left! We gave a butterfly chrysalis to a junior class at Hilltop School and taught them about how/why to tag the butterfly when it emerged. We were super excited to hear that their butterfly emerged successfully and was tagged and released, but also that the experience had led to literacy and art work in class. We don't always get to see the follow up work that happens, but love hearing about it.🦋 Thanks Taupo Community Gardens for the chrysalis and Moths and Butterflies of NZ Trust for the tags. This type of hands on collaborative citizen science project creates such awesome learning opportunities for tamariki across many curriculum areas.💚
