Today was one of those pinch-me moments. Seeing Kura Cares Charity officially recognised as a registered Private Training Establishment (PTE) by NZQA, and having that acknowledged by the Deputy Chief Executive of NZQA, was more than just a milestone, it was confirmation that the vision we have carried for years is starting to come to life.
Our vision has always been bigger than programmes. It has always been about creating real pathways for our rangatahi helping them build confidence, gain meaningful skills, earn credits, and move into employment, training, or further education with purpose and pride.
We want to see our young people walk into rooms knowing who they are, where they come from, and what they are capable of. We want to help them gain qualifications in a way that makes sense to them, through kaupapa that is culturally grounded, practical, and connected to real-life outcomes.
But I’ll be honest, this journey hasn’t been easy.
Recently, we received disappointing news that a potential contract, which could have provided long-term sustainability for our organisation, was declined. What hurt the most was knowing how much work we have done behind the scenes, the massive operational changes, the governance improvements, the systems, the accountability, the compliance, and now achieving official PTE registration.
So while that door may have closed, it has only made us stronger. Funding is tight locally, and that is the reality many grassroots organisations are facing.
But we are not stopping. We are now looking offshore, building new relationships, exploring new opportunities, and continuing to position Kura Cares Charity and our PTE for long-term impact.
What doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
This recognition is proof that the work is real, the vision is real, and the future is bigger than any setback.
For our rangatahi, for our whānau, and for the generations coming after us — we keep going.
