1. LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM AND COUNCIL AMALGAMATION

Discussions continue regarding possible changes to local government structures, including the potential amalgamation of councils into larger regional entities.

While no decisions have been made, such changes could affect how our hapū engage with local government and influence decisions that impact our communities, whenua, and taiao. Our concern is ensuring that local relationships, mana whenua interests, and community voices are not diminished within larger governance arrangements.

We will continue to monitor developments and keep whānau informed as further information becomes available.

2. PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS

With local and national elections approaching, we encourage all eligible whānau to check their enrolment details, register to vote, and support rangatahi who are becoming eligible voters.

Recent discussions around Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori representation, and legislative changes have highlighted the importance of Māori participation in decision-making. Regardless of political views, it is important that our voices are heard through the democratic process.

Our tūpuna fought hard to protect the rights and interests of future generations. One way we honour that legacy is by ensuring we are informed, engaged, and ready to vote.

3. MAUAO LANDSLIDE UPDATE

Work continues following the recent landslides at Mauao, with ongoing assessments focused on public safety, environmental management, and the protection of cultural values.

While there is strong support for reopening access to the maunga, significant work is still required to stabilise affected areas and ensure any reopening can occur safely and respectfully. Mauao remains one of the most important cultural landmarks in Tauranga Moana, and decisions regarding its future must carefully balance safety, cultural heritage, and environmental considerations.

Further updates will be shared as recovery planning progresses.

🌊 Update: New Tsunami Evacuation Maps Now Available
The latest tsunami inundation modelling for the Bay of Plenty has been released, and updated evacuation maps are now available for our communities.

It is vital that we all take a moment to review these updates to ensure we know exactly where to go if an emergency occurs. Staying informed is the best way to keep our whānau and neighborhoods safe.

What you need to do:
Check your zones: Visit the Bay of Plenty Tsunami Evacuation Viewer to see if your home, work, or school is in a new or updated evacuation zone.

"Blue Means Go": Remember, the blue zone represents the area you need to evacuate from if you feel a long or strong earthquake. Don't wait for an official warning—if it’s long or strong, get gone!

Plan your route: Use these maps to plan your fastest route to higher ground or a designated safe location ahead of time.

Important reminders:
Long or Strong, Get Gone: If you feel an earthquake that makes it hard to stand up, or one that lasts a minute or more, do not wait for a siren or an official alert. Move to higher ground immediately.

Stay updated: Keep listening to local radio and official civil defence channels for updates after any event.

Stay safe and make sure your family knows the plan.

📢 State of Emergency now lifted - Monday 13 April

We’ve now lifted the State of Emergency for the Western Bay of Plenty, as conditions ease across the District. We even had some sun today. ☀️

A few updates for you 👇

🌬️ The worst of the cyclone missed us, but we did have some fallen trees, blocked roads and power outages - these have mostly been sorted.

🔌 Power has now been restored to most affected areas, including Matakana Island and Paengaroa.

🛠️ Our crews and contractors are still out there doing clean-up work - clearing trees, unblocking drains and making sure everything is safe.

📍 There may still be a few spots that need attention. If you see something like a blocked drain or fallen tree, please let us know on 0800 926 372 or through Antenno.

💛 A big thank you again to our Western Bay community for the way we prepared and came together to support each other.
