1. LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM AND COUNCIL AMALGAMATION
Discussions continue regarding possible changes to local government structures, including the potential amalgamation of councils into larger regional entities.
While no decisions have been made, such changes could affect how our hapū engage with local government and influence decisions that impact our communities, whenua, and taiao. Our concern is ensuring that local relationships, mana whenua interests, and community voices are not diminished within larger governance arrangements.
We will continue to monitor developments and keep whānau informed as further information becomes available.
2. PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS
With local and national elections approaching, we encourage all eligible whānau to check their enrolment details, register to vote, and support rangatahi who are becoming eligible voters.
Recent discussions around Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori representation, and legislative changes have highlighted the importance of Māori participation in decision-making. Regardless of political views, it is important that our voices are heard through the democratic process.
Our tūpuna fought hard to protect the rights and interests of future generations. One way we honour that legacy is by ensuring we are informed, engaged, and ready to vote.
3. MAUAO LANDSLIDE UPDATE
Work continues following the recent landslides at Mauao, with ongoing assessments focused on public safety, environmental management, and the protection of cultural values.
While there is strong support for reopening access to the maunga, significant work is still required to stabilise affected areas and ensure any reopening can occur safely and respectfully. Mauao remains one of the most important cultural landmarks in Tauranga Moana, and decisions regarding its future must carefully balance safety, cultural heritage, and environmental considerations.
Further updates will be shared as recovery planning progresses.
