Come see a KiwiHomeHarvest Planter IN REAL LIFE at Mitre 10!

We’ve got a Mighty T (our mid-sized planter) on display, with Harry doing a great job of showing how it works.

That handle is an old ski, and the netting frame uses bike rims and brake cables. So there are quite a few former lives in this portable little veggie patch!

Our first build day was a cracker, and we’ve got 5 others coming as we get more planters ready for local homes.

Gary is a finalist for Community Service at the Spirit of the Wakatipu Awards!

And Gary being Gary, he was very quick to instruct us to make this post all about everyone and anyone other than him.

So we want to take the opportunity to give a well-deserved shout-out to Gary’s colleague and KiwiHarvest legend Carmel, as well as all our amazing volunteers, who put so much time and care into getting good food to people across our region. There’s a whole crew behind what we do, and we’re hugely grateful for all of them.

Gary is also in very good company, with Central Lakes Family Services and Altrusa International Queenstown named as fellow finalists. We’re lucky to work alongside these wonderful people and have had their support at KiwiHarvest too. It’s so good to see them getting some well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, you lot!

Massive thanks to 45South Community Foundation for celebrating the people doing good around the Whakatipu, and to Queenstown Airport for sponsoring the Community Service Award and being a key supporter of our work.

Got a pair of skis that have seen their last run? We’ve got a use for them! 🎿🥬

We’re collecting old skis to use in our KiwiHomeHarvest planters, helping local households grow their own veggies and herbs at home.

So if you’re having an end-of-season clear-out, pop any unwanted skis in the collection box in the trade area at Mitre 10 MEGA Queenstown.

Massive thanks to the Mitre 10 team for giving us a spot to collect them, and to everyone passing their old gear our way.

We roped in a stellar crew of Liger Leadership Academy New Zealand students to clean and cut the Ecostore drums used in all our KiwiHomeHarvest planters!

🥬 The refill tubs now get a second life filled with compost* and planted with veggie and herb seedlings.

Big thanks to the glorious folks from Findex in Queenstown who got stuck into prepping material for our KiwiHomeHarvest planter project last week! Lots of enthusiasm and good chats were had.

Big up Matt and Iggy from Holiday Inn Queenstown Remarkables Park who popped over to our Frankton depot to break down some pallets for us to turn into KiwiHomeHarvest planters!

💪 Legends!!

One pallet broken down is, on average, enough for one of our planters, and with 100 planters to make we'll gladly accept more help!

So if your team wants a time-out to break down some pallets, let us know and we can drop them off to your office and pick them back up once they're broken down.

Teamwork makes the dream work! 🌈

One person’s trash is another's… garden! 🥬

Bike rims. Ecostore drums. Powerade bottles. Old handlebars!

When we started building the KiwiHomeHarvest planters, we wanted to make the most of what’s already there rather than let useful stuff go to waste. (just like we do with our rescue food 😉)

And quite a few people have helped us do exactly that!

OneBike donated the handlebars, Liger Leadership Academy New Zealand students helped prep the Ecostore drums, Up-Cycles Charitable Trust supplied the bike rims, and Wanaka Wastebusters collected and donated the Powerade New Zealand bottles, along with plenty of other helping hands along the way.

All those random bits and pieces are now becoming planters for people across Queenstown, Wānaka and Cromwell to grow their own veggies and herbs at home.

You don’t need experience.
First-time growers are strongly encouraged to apply. Your gardening mentor will be there to help you learn as you go.

🤔 “I don’t have time to water constantly.”
That’s okay.
Our self-watering systems significantly reduce how often you need to water compared with a conventional raised garden.

🤔 “I don’t have a big backyard.”
You don’t necessarily need one.
We have three different garden models designed to suit different spaces, households and growing ambitions.

🤔 “I wouldn’t know where to start.”
That’s exactly what the programme is for.
Your garden, compost, starter seedlings, Assembly Event, growing information and mentor support are all included.
