Why Populations Count

Why Populations Count I’ve never seen a problem that wouldn’t be easier to solve with fewer people, or harder, and ultimately impossible, with more." Sir David Attenborough

There is no ecosystem on this planet that can sustain the unchecked growth of one species. Inevitably, a critical tipping point is reached and that ecosystem collapses; recovering only once populations are again in balance. However when a species, such as ours, is not regulated by the immediate ecosystem it is in and as a result impacts on every ecosystem on this planet, there is cause for serious

concern. Will it take the complete collapse of our planets forests, water reserves, food supplies, mass extinction of other species and degradation of our atmosphere to bring our population back in balance? Or will we each make the choice to halt our marching numbers before we reach that tipping point? We are homosapiens – latin for “wiseman” – we have the knowledge, intelligence and ability to choose our course - let’s not let our numbers be regulated by ecosystem collapse and its partner’s famine, war and disease; we need to make a global effort towards reducing and then stabilising our numbers without coercion or force . We must recognise that having children is not our right - it is a responsibility to the future of this planet, to every species, to every person and to every child born.
