Collection for Arohata - please help us to support our community!
Some information about this great project:
1. Project began in a very humble way 2011 after a few people shared a meeting with the Director of Arohata, who explained that many women came into the prison with minimal underwear and sometimes none. (Household money was spent on their families rather than themselves.)
2. Underwear which is
a. New knickers – the knickers and packs of knickers are like gold and held at Arohata.
b. New or in good condition bras
3. Good underwear helps to start the day in a positive frame of mind/mood.
4. Re-enforces to the women-in-care that their surrounding community, and staff care about their well-being.
5. Underwear is available for the women to select from during the year as approved. Some bras are also sent to Auckland and Christchurch (the other two women’s prisons).
6. The women cannot afford to replace their underwear from the inside, and especially women on long-term stays.
7. Feedback from Arohata staff say that the women are very excited and grateful to receive our donations, and that they can keep them on release. ☺
Thank you to Farmer’s North City who have been very generous with sponsorship of this project over recent years.
Bring your donations to Aspiring Walls, 4 Mohuia Crescent, Elsdon by end of October.
