Supporting five young women through the First Foundation programme is a significant commitment that will truly change the trajectory of their lives

Sponsorship and mentorship are powerful enablers — while the financial support of a scholarship is vital, having that consistent professional guidance often makes the biggest difference in navigating time at university and early careers.

Angela recently caught up with 3 of the 5. Anita and Payton, who are supported financially, are in the 2nd and 3rd years respectively of their degrees at Auckland University. While, Lucia, a new mentee, is in her final year at school.

It's such a fulfilling thing to witness successful careers and lives in the making!

We protected the ban!

Following a fantastic, compelling campaign by a large group of animal welfare advocates and activists, from here and abroad, it's now clear that the ban on exporting farmed animals by sea will be retained. WHAT A WIN!

Thanks for all the organisations that led this campaign including (Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Aotearoa, SPCA New Zealand, and SAFE, and all the individuals that signed the petition, lobbied and showed up for the animals.

Animal Welfare Minister Andrew Hoggard could not get Cabinet agreement on overturning the ban, which formed part of coalition agreements with both ACT and NZ First.

We love Waihi beach and a community led effort is making Waihī Beach the first truly accessible beach in NZ.
Five years ago, locals, businesses, supporters and volunteers came together to fundraise, buy and set up beach mats and beach wheelchairs. Every year, from Labour Weekend to Easter, volunteers lay the mats so more people can get to the beach and into the surf.
Last weekend, Live Well Waihi Beach and Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club opened a fully accessible changing facility inside the lifeguard clubhouse, designed with guidance from a local accessibility ambassador. Lovely to meet Dame Catriona Williams!
There’s also accessible beach days and adaptive surfing lessons – and there’s more on the way.
We love how the Waihī Beach community is backing better access so more people can enjoy a classic Kiwi beach day with confidence and independence. This work shows what’s possible when communities and organisations work together to remove barriers. Congratulations Live Well Waihi Beach and Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club!

TWO METRES PASSING DISTANCE FOR HORSES

✅ 2m is in line with the internationally recognised Pass Wide and Slow road safety message for equines

✅ consistency in road safety messaging is important

✅ New Zealand Police have endorsed the Pass Wide and Slow message (2m). NZ Police have reconfirmed support.(25/02/2026) Thank you Superintendent.

✅ when spooked horses can move quickly sideways - the more space given helps to protect the rider, driver/passengers and the animal

44 people have lost their lives whilst riding or driving a horse on the road (aged 10 to 79-years) between 2000 and 2022. Anecdotal evidence suggests near misses, injury and road riding trauma is rife. This is why the Pass Wide and Slow message WILL SAVE LIVES. Ensuring drivers give space is critical to safely sharing the road.

Please tell NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi 2m passing of horse riders is the appropriate distance.

Research Shows the Importance of Investing in Girls
Australians Investing in Women recently held their annual Gender-Wise Event in partnership with the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL), featuring the Hon. Julia Gillard AC, with the generous support of PwC. While the event highlighted the work of the GIWL and invited support for their important research agenda on women’s leadership, Ms Gillard also highlighted the importance of investing in girls. “The single best investment you can make for a country to build peace and prosperity is to invest in girls’ education.”

12 Days of Giving Campaign Christmas 2025, part 2
The Kindness Collective is another organisation that is able to operate due to the generous support of community and philanthropic giving, including the Gattung Foundation. KC shows us why collective giving can lead to a more joyful Christmas for kids and their whanau.
Sarah Page and her team at the Kindness Collective (KC) provide a range of support for families and young people that need a little extra help, especially around the holidays.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland with centre throughout NZ, Sarah tells us about the Christmas Joy Store and Te Makete Harikoa, KC’s social supermarket. Kindness is more than just a name, for KC it describes the caring and affirming way that they engage with the local people.

12 Days of Giving Campaign Christmas 2025, part 1
One of the organisations highlighted this year, was Tōnui Collab, in Gisborne. The Tōnui Collab story shows just how important it is to have visionary funders team up with passionate educators to provide remarkable opportunities for young people.
With support from the Gattung Foundation, Tōnui Collab in Gisborne supports teams of girls in years 6 to 9 from different kura to collaboratively experiment with VEX IQ Robotics. Students also get to learn from wāhine leaders who are established in science and technology roles and gain confidence that they too can follow career pathways inspired by scientific study.
