Great Potentials Foundation Great Potentials Foundation is a charitable trust for the promotion of education & parental support.

We work for and with children, young people and families to relieve suffering, release potential, promote family functioning, reduce disparities in New Zealand society, reduce crime and violence and break the cycle of disadvantage. ⭐ We recently sat down with MATES Junior mentee Meison and his grandmother, Aroha, who shared how having a mentor can broaden the possibilities for young people.

For Aroha, Meison’s final year of Intermediate came with some anxiety. With major health challenges happening within their whānau, it can be easy for the focus to shift away from schoolwork and onto what is happening at home.

“Meison is a very caring young man within our whānau but compared to the chaos of current life, he is very nondemanding and quiet. His parents and I all don't want him to get lost in the noise of it all; he deserves so much more from us all", says Aroha.

Moving onto college, Aroha recognised that there were limits to the opportunities and pathways her whānau could expose him to.

“We can only provide exposure to people, careers and opportunities within our own friends and whānau. This creates limitations. Fortunately, the MATES programme has been a gamechanger, providing invaluable support and guidance through mentors who generously share their time, expertise and experiences, broadening the horizons for not only my Meison but all our tamariki on the MATES programmes.”

Our bilingual HIPPY storybooks honour te reo Māori as a vibrant, living language, recognising that language is a fundamental part of the HIPPY Programme. 📚

As we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week, we continue to create opportunities for tamariki and their whānau to engage with te reo Māori through our storybooks and activities, enriching their connection to language and culture. ⭐

A big thank you to University of Auckland for an amazing day for 100 students from MATES senior schools! 🎓

Uni for a Day is an opportunity for students to hear from university staff, connect with other students, and explore university as their next step in education. ⭐

This year, students were warmly welcomed by uni staff, heard inspirational talks, especially on critical thinking with MATES Alumni Andrew, summer programme, application process and scholarships. They also took part in interactive sessions with university groups, including Campus Care. These sessions helped students grow their understanding of the challenges they may face and ways to overcome them.

They also joined a guided tour of the university facilities, bringing the goals they have set for their future at university closer to becoming a reality.

The day wrapped up with students and staff sharing their reflections and final thoughts on their experience.

Thank you to everyone at the University of Auckland for making this such a valuable and inspiring experience for our MATES students! ⭐⭐

⭐⭐ We are incredibly grateful to the Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust for their generous support of MATES. With their support, we were able to help deliver our MATES programme across 14 schools in Auckland providing mentoring and tutoring.

The stories of Bruce and Meison are just two of the many young people whose lives have been shaped by their journey with MATES, showing the lasting difference that mentoring can make.

⭐⭐This week, a group of students in their final year of high school from MATES spent the day at the Lane Neave Lawyers Auckland office, learning all about the different areas of law and planning their pathways towards internships and a future career in a law firm.

A huge thank you to the Lane Neave Lawyers team and amazing panelists for giving their time, sharing their insights and creating a space for our students to be inspired.
