It's time for Nature's Grace to go to market! I am really looking forward to another one of the General Collective extravanganzas showcasing Aotearoa-made treasures. I am sure there will be some great gift options for your Mum. And to celebrate our first birthday Nature's Grace is having our first-ever product sale at the market. Hopefully see you there this Sunday!

Polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polystyrene,
expanded polystyrene, acetonitrile butadiene styrene and polymethyl methacrylate microplastics have, for the first time, been found in human blood. The study, published in Environment International last month, does not draw conclusions on associated health risks. Regardless, it is already a game-changer- as a stark reminder of the ugliness of what we are allowing to happen. Last month 175 nations signed a global treaty to prevent plastic pollution. The thought of plastic in our blood will surely drive real action beyond just treaty signing.

And if it is in our blood it will also be present in the myriad of other animals that we share planet earth with. Another problem on top of losing their habitats, being killed by invasive pests, more floods, more fires, and changes in global temperatures that alter their natural life cycles.

Today the charitable trust we help support, Endangered Species Foundation of New Zealand alongside SaveOurSands.org and Greenpeace Aotearoa presented their 14,000+ submission to Auckland Council to decline resource consent applications for continued sand dredging along the Pakiri and Mangawhai coastlines. Watch the video below for sobering information about the scale and adverse impacts of this dredging. These include threatening the survival of the remaining approximately 45 fairy terns left in existence anywhere in the world.

The immediate threat is housing/development but accelerating coastal erosion and sea level rise also threaten this precious low-lying coastal sand-dune habitat. Home to our most endangered native bird - the delicately beautiful tara iti (fairy tern) with only a total of around 45 birds left in existence. Thanks to the Department of Conservation Auckland Zoo and many community-led conservation groups like the Endangered Species Foundation of New Zealand there is work being done to try and save this species from extinction.

OPINION: The Government pledged to protect 30 per cent of our ocean by 2030. So why are local communities being forced to fight for their beaches?

The small Whangamata dotterel population lost all of their remnant foreshore habitat AND the sand dunes eroded even closer to beachside properties, as a result of Cyclone Cody and the Tongan volcanic eruption. The dotterels need to find new homes immediately and the humans will be in the same position very soon as storm events become more intense and frequent. Hopefully 2022 will feature MORE action to reduce currently growing carbon emissions and LESS vacuous rhetoric/goal setting.
