Polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polystyrene,
expanded polystyrene, acetonitrile butadiene styrene and polymethyl methacrylate microplastics have, for the first time, been found in human blood. The study, published in Environment International last month, does not draw conclusions on associated health risks. Regardless, it is already a game-changer- as a stark reminder of the ugliness of what we are allowing to happen. Last month 175 nations signed a global treaty to prevent plastic pollution. The thought of plastic in our blood will surely drive real action beyond just treaty signing.
And if it is in our blood it will also be present in the myriad of other animals that we share planet earth with. Another problem on top of losing their habitats, being killed by invasive pests, more floods, more fires, and changes in global temperatures that alter their natural life cycles.
