Join us on Thursday the 28th of May for a free webinar exploring the gap between myths, media narratives, and the real experiences of rangatahi in Aotearoa NZ. We’ll discuss how disconnection between generations and communities impacts young people, and why rebuilding those connections through mentoring can create lasting positive change.

Hear practical insights, real examples of mentoring programmes transforming communities across NZ, the evidence behind why mentoring works, and ways you can support young people through volunteering, advocacy, and community involvement.

Presented by James McGoram and the NZ Youth Mentoring Network.

One of the things we found in our recent Youth Mentoring Sector Insights study was that more than half the organisations who engage with our network are Tier 3 charities – organisations with a small staff that is sometimes no more than a single person. This aligns with our experience of working with small teams who benefit from the professional development opportunities that our workshops provide. It also hints at another, deeper story about our society – and the way in which small, local organisations are created to meet community needs, time and again, across the country.

What lessons might we learn from each other? How can skills, funding, and success stories be shared across this network for greater impact? These are the questions that we’re hoping to explore.

When we explored the data in our recent Youth Mentoring Sector Insights study we were not surprised to see almost 300,000 individuals had been reached by the organisations that engage with our network. Mentoring happens in a variety of ways, and alongside many other activities and social support. It can be tricky to try to ‘isolate’ mentoring practice but what we do know (supported by the evidence and academic research) is that improved training for both paid social workers and for volunteers is essential for better outcomes.
