From our CEO, Chris Duggan:

This was a pinch-me moment!

The Minister of Education, Hon Erica Stanford MP, announced the nationwide rollout of science and pūtaiao kits while visiting Stanhope Road School in Mt Wellington Auckland this week. House of Science NZ has been awarded the contract for this work and I am incredibly excited to be in a position to provide curriculum‑aligned, hands‑on science kits for Years 0–8 learners in all state and state‑integrated schools and kura, helping teachers bring science to life in classrooms across the country.

This is a significant milestone for our organisation and a real credit to the dedication of our team. It also reflects the encouragement, advocacy and goodwill of our wider House of Science community, including friends and supporters, and we’re very grateful for the role they’ve played in helping us get here.

The opportunity before us now is incredibly exciting, but there is a lot to do. We are in the process of refining our operating model to allow us to scale up effectively and deliver the contract with excellence. We’re also considering how we can continue working with our valued supporters and partners as we move into this next phase, and we look forward to exploring what that might look like in the months ahead.

And for all my teacher friends, kit delivery will continue in selected regions based on our current reach, with the number of participating schools and regions increasing throughout the year. Full national coverage is expected by early to mid‑2027. Visit our website https://houseofscience.nz if you'd like to be added to the wailist.

It's delivery day 🌞 schools will receive their kits today.
Nice to see a mural in progress in Paeroa, this is outside our House of Science North Waikato branch. Volunteers Dave and Helen checking out the progress. We cant wait to see the finished out come ❤️🎨

The Valley Profile article
Paeroa could soon be even more ‘world famous’. This time, for its walls.
Spearheaded by the Paeroa Business Association and largely funded by the Hauraki District Council’s Public Art Fund, a new mural showcasing the town’s landscape will be installed on the side of E Ronnie’s Café on Corbett Street, replacing an older artwork that currently occupies the wall.
Project lead Linley Rose told The Profile that a new mural had been in the making for almost a year, following the business association’s formation in October, 2024.
Following a search for the right artist, the team landed on Wellington-based Regan Balzer to bring the mural to life.

🥁 Drumroll please… the 2025 Bird of the Year is the kārearea! 👑

The New Zealand falcon has swooped in to claim the crown – again. Fast, fierce, and utterly fearless, kārearea can dive at over 200 km/h and sn**ch prey mid-air. No wonder they’ve charmed voters a second time.

You’ll spot them from wild tussock lands to forests, on the coast, and even city skylines – our warrior of the skies, and the only falcon found in Aotearoa.

But even champions need back-up. Kārearea nest on the ground, leaving eggs exposed to cats, stoats, and other predators. With more than 80% of our manu in trouble, every vote in this competition is about more than a crown – it’s about sparking action for nature.

Kārearea isn’t just a bird, it’s a taonga: a messenger in Māori tradition, a face on our $20 note, a muse for artists and storytellers. Today, it’s also your Bird of the Year.

💛 Thank you to everyone who voted, campaigned, and flocked together for our manu. Behind the fun is a serious message: more than 80% of our native birds are threatened or at risk. Your votes don’t just crown a champion – they help raise voices for nature.
