The Pukehina Residents and Ratepayers Association (PRRA) confirms that dune repair work
will be conducted commencing Thursday June 25 2026.
The proposed push-up work is limited to the dunes fronting:
75-91 Pukehina Parade
101-127 Pukehina Parade
141-143 Pukehina Parade
149-161 Pukehina Parade
199-231 Pukehina Parade
Collectively, the total length of the works is just under 1500 m. The earlier dune repair works
in most of the above-listed areas remain to varying extents, but have been reduced by
easterly wave events. Accordingly, the aim of the works is to bolster the dunes, as required,
to ensure a good buffer over the coming winter and spring periods.
Beyond spring, the strong El Nino conditions projected for summer should, in theory, reduce
the easterly conditions and dune damage that have dominated in recent summers.
However, nature is of course not entirely predictable!
Where public accessways occur within the work areas, the dune will also be reinstated as
required to ensure public access, but only where this work can be undertaken without
damaging access structures. As requested by WBoPDC, particular care will be taken to

ensure around accessways 4 (next to 87 Pukehina Parade) and 10 (beside 227 Pukehina
Parade) to ensure that recently repaired railings and sand-ladders are not damaged.
As normal, the work will be conducted in accordance with the Resource Consent No. 68165
(CC.01, CC.03, CC.04 & LC.01) they hold for this work.
As noted in previous reports, the work is particularly important in this area of Pukehina
Beach because historic (i.e. legacy) development has resulted in houses and properties
located too close to the sea.
As with previous dune repair work of this nature at Pukehina, the proposed work is simply
aimed at providing interim protection for the relevant properties and dwellings assessed to
be at risk (ideally a sufficient width of sacrificial dune buffer for at least one major storm
erosion event) until longer term solutions are developed. The dune repair does need to be
reinstated after severe erosion events, but this work is simple, and the environmental effect
are only minor and temporary. The works are by far the most cost-effective option available
to homeowners.
