To be held on FEBRUARY 20th 2016, Tackle The Takitimus is a community driven fundraising event. TAKITIMU MOUNTAINS
Situated to the east of Fiordland National Park, the Takitimu Mountains are one of Southland's greatest natural features. They are visible from all points on the Southland landscape. EVENT HISTORY
Back in the 1970s, a 'Takithon' event was held as a fundraiser for the local Blackmount
community centre. In 1978, 300 people walked/climbed the Takitimus as part of this event. NOW
An event is being run on February 20th 2016, 'Tackle the Takitimus', a personal mountain challenge open to anyone with the determination and drive to get to the top. Iti rearea, teitei kahikatea ka taea - Even the smallest bird can reach the top of the tallest tree. The walk/climb will be from the foot of the mountain on Wairaki Station (~500 m) at the south western end of the mountain range, to Corner Peaks at the top (1448 m). A birds-eye view of the surrounding Southland landscape will be the reward, weather permitting. There and back again-completion times will be 4 - 7 hours. Places are limited so prompt entry is recommended. BASECAMP - ON THE DAY
For those who want to enjoy the day but not climb the mountain, you are welcome to spend the day at our Basecamp on Wairaki Station. Basecamp will be well-equipped with food & drink for sale, shelter, toilets and a kid's play area. Your children must be supervised by you (and not us!) at all times. Feel free to bring a picnic, kick back, relax and enjoy this special place. Scenic helicopter flights will be available from Te Anau Helicopters. Event t-shirts will be available to purchase closer to the day. No eftpos facilities will be available so please bring cash. AFTER THE CLIMB
Climbers stay around for a free drink and gourmet sausage, family entertainment, spot prizes and Auction. Two $5 notes signed by Sir Edmund Hillary will be auctioned along with several other fantastic items. Tackle the Takitimus is a fundraiser for Blackmount community facilities.
