LISTERIA UPDATE 🙈🫣

So today we officially have no new cases 🐮🤞

🐮 We've got 20 heifer left in organic cert
🐮 We've got 20 to sell due to treatment
🐮 And sadly had to put 11 down

Its been an absolute rolling coaster ride and we've tried everything organically possible to slow the disease and everything conventional possible to treat it.

Balage pH tested high but negative for Listeria 🤷🏼‍♀️ but the way the disease presented it had to come from the balage.

Remaining heifers are looking beautiful and recovered and recovering are also doing great, just like they never had the disease.

What a ride its been... not one I'd like to take again! We are 12 days into a 21 day incubation so not out of the woods yet, but I feel like i've got the beast tamed!!

Thanks to all our wonderful helpers today for our first potting day of the year! A bit of potting therapy in the nursery was just what was needed!

This bag of goodies is an organic farmers worst nightmare!!

But when things go bad, we'll do anything to stop our animals suffering, being a farmer is a pretty tough gig at times!

Over the last week our big beautiful heifer replacement calves have been rapidly developing neurological symptoms, high fevers, blindness, unable to walk and we've been having to put them down, unable to identify what was the cause. Within 24 hours they would go from unhappy and lethargic to permanent brain damage from meningitis.

Today we finally got the autopsy results back and it was confirmed they are getting Listeria.... WTF! This is something I've never come across in our animals.

So now we work to try determine the source, try stop the other calves coming down with it as there is up to a 3 week incubation period.

We definitely aren't winning at the moment which means we are doing a whole lot of learning.

5 deaths and 9 treated so far which won't be able to join our organic herd, its a tough pill to swallow and there has been many tears shed!

But that's farming, best and toughest job on the planet, even in our resilient organic operation things get past us!

Lucky we've got great vets and great homeopathic practitioners to help us work through this!

We've got this right!

Gave our NZ AutoTraps AT220 a rebait and fresh battery today.

Its still killing away! 14 possums and 28 rats/mice/triggers.

Bloody love these traps!! They take zero effort!!

At least the cut worm left us something in our winter crops! Without any competition what radish and turnips we have grew massive!!

Our winter crops challenged us massively this year and even after we got through the cut worm and two redrills, our oats ended up as rusty as an old tin can!

If we're not winning we're learning!

There's always something and that's farming!

Fonterra organics conference 2026!
