🦺 Te Awa Year in Review #2 - The Volunteers 🦺

As we count down to our first birthday this Saturday, and with it being National Volunteer Week, it's time to put the spotlight on our volunteers. πŸ’›

Over the last 52 events, more than 100 different people have volunteered at Te Awa parkrun. From marshalling, barcode scanning, timing, photography, chalk artistry, token sorting at the cafΓ©, setup, pack down, and everything in between, you've helped build the incredible community we have today.

While we're grateful for every single volunteer, we'd like to give a special shout-out to some of our most frequent hi-vis heroes:

πŸ‘ Tessa – 50 events
πŸ‘ Stu - 44 events
πŸ‘ Vicky - 40 events
πŸ‘ Liz – 32 events
πŸ‘ Kathleen – 26 events
πŸ‘ Gay – 24 events
πŸ‘ Andrew – 24 events
πŸ‘ Jeanne – 22 events

And to Olive, Alison, Sharon, the two Pauls, Allan, Rhiannon, Wren, Helen, Aaron, Stuart, Malcolm, our Run Directors, those who volunteer between kids sports, those who step up while injured, and everyone else who has helped along the way - thank you.

Te Awa parkrun simply wouldn't exist without volunteers. You've helped create something pretty special over the last year, and we're incredibly grateful.

πŸ’™ See you on Saturday as we celebrate our first birthday!

πŸŽ‰ Te Awa parkrun Year in Review #1: The Dream πŸŽ‰

As we count down to our first birthday this Saturday, we're taking a look back at the first year of Te Awa parkrun. Throughout the week we'll be sharing a series of posts celebrating the people, moments, milestones and memories that have made Te Awa what it is today.

It all started with a dream.

Almost two years ago, Te Awa parkrun was just an idea.

Stu loved parkrun and wanted to create something special, something that could be offered to those to the north of Hamilton and that would bridge the gap between Hamilton and Auckland parkruns. So we walked the river path in Ngāruawāhia looking for the perfect course.

The Point had parking.
The Point had toilets.
The Point was practical.

But then we found Perry Bridge.

A bridge that would give our course character. A bridge that would become part of countless Saturday morning stories.

We completed the course trials, filled out the paperwork, recruited volunteers, found a guy willing to turn up in a different costume every week, and eventually parkrun gave us the green light.

On a cold, foggy Matariki morning, Te Awa parkrun was born.

Fifty-two events later, we've welcomed thousands of participants, celebrated milestones and PBs, made lifelong friendships, and built a community that genuinely looks forward to Saturday mornings.

What started as Stu's dream has become something much bigger than we ever imagined.

And we're only just getting started.

Stay tuned for the next instalment of our Year in Review series tomorrow!

πŸ’― Congratulations to Speed Freaks legend Jeananne on completing her 100th parkrun! It was awesome to welcome Jeananne and her Auckland crew to Te Awa to celebrate this incredible achievement. Thank you for choosing Te Awa for your milestone run! πŸ₯³

⭐ A huge congratulations to Te Awa regular Wren on reaching 50 parkruns! As if the milestone wasn't enough, Wren celebrated in style by smashing out a course PB. What a way to mark the occasion! πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯
