Whakatū Te Korowai Manaakitanga Trust, has a rich history rooted in the Nelson community. Founded in 2001 as a voluntary group of wahine from the Whakatū Māori Women’s Welfare League.
They have grown into a leading non-government organisation providing essential social services to the Nelson/Tasman region.

1994 - the Whakatū branch of the Maori Women’s Welfare League became the first Māori provider of contracted health services in the region.

2001 - Whakatū Te Korowai Manaakitanga Trust was established.

2002 - the Whakatū Te Korowai Trust purchased the building at 398 Main Road Stoke where they still serve the community till the present day (2026).

The Whakatū branch of the Maori Womens Welfare League have used this whare as their base for monthly hui and wananga since 2002.

As Te Ropu Wahine Maori toko i Te Ora celebrates its 75th anniversary in September 2026, the Whakatū branch is pleased to share a look back at our own journey, the history, and the wahine who have shaped our kaupapa here in Te Tauihu.

Established in 1958, Whakatū peka has been an active part of the League kaupapa for almost seven decades. Guided by the principle of "TATAU TATAU", our members have worked at the harakeke level to support whanau across Te Tauihu, contributing to the wider movement of more than 150 branches throughout Aotearoa.
