The latest discussion about the East-West Cycleway seems to have become dominated by one question: how many car parks might be lost.

But that misses the bigger picture.

The East-West Cycleway is the missing link in Nelson's cycling network, connecting schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods and key destinations across the city. It will make cycling safer, give people more transport choices, and help more children travel independently.

For years, our community has been asking for a safe, connected cycling network. We shouldn't lose sight of that goal because of a debate over parking spaces.

No route is perfect, and there are legitimate concerns about issues such as parking loss and gradients. But these can be addressed through good design. What would be a real loss is abandoning this vital project altogether.

The East-West Cycleway is too important to let stall now.

If you'd like to show your support, keep an eye out for our next Bike Rave! 🚲🎉 More details coming soon.

Potentially 200 car parks could be lost to make way for a cross-town cycleway, leaving Nelson's elected members uneasy, but one cycling advocate reckons the concerns are overblown.

Nelson is already leading the way, with the highest rate of people cycling to work in New Zealand—8.1% (2023 Census) 🚲

And it’s growing. In March, an extra 1,200 cyclists were recorded on the Railway Reserve, driven by the recent fuel crisis. This is a glimpse of what’s possible.

Imagine this…

What if cycling felt safe, easy, and connected for everyone—not just the confident few?
What if we had a fully continuous cycle network linking our neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces?

The demand is already here—but turning that demand into action takes all of us. Council needs to invest in safe, connected cycling infrastructure, and they need to see that the community is behind it. Every voice, every ride, and every show of support helps make that case stronger.

Our bike rave video has already reached 12K people —that’s thanks to you. Keep sharing, keep the momentum going, and keep showing up. Together, we can make safer cycling in Nelson impossible to ignore.

What a ride! 🚲

We held a Bike Rave on 21st March - a fun, family-friendly event that rode the proposed East-West Cycleway route right here in Nelson.

The energy was brilliant. Colourful bikes, fancy dress, families, kids, and a community coming together to show Nelson City Council why this connection matters.

The proposed East-West Cycle Link would give Nelson a safer, more connected route for everyday cycling - and events like this show just how much support there is for making it happen.

Watch the video above, Keep your eyes peeled for Heinz the Ski Champion who’s converted to Cycling!

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER: Sharing this free family-friendly mountain bike event coming up on April 12. Looks really fun!

This event is funded and run by Wayne Pool, a very generous and community minded local builder.

Jelly Bean Alley is a great opportunity for families to ride in a relay on a simple non-technical trail at Conifer MTB park, Moturoa, Rabbit Island. Running bikes, pedal bikes, kids on shotgun bikes are all welcome at this event and parents can follow riders around the trail.

Get your friends and whānau together and check it out. It's a super day out!
