Hunt Family Trophy:
This week a Wellington College XI took on 7 other colleges in the annual Hunt Family Trophy, an end of season T20 tournament. To start WC were beaten by Scots but bounced back with a good win against Onslow. After a win over Newlands in the final match of pool play WC found themselves in a semi final vs rivals St Pats, unbeaten in their pool. Following a typically tight encounter, going into the final over, WC came out on top to win by 3 wickets. This meant a final against the only unbeaten team of the tournament - Scots College and the final didn't disappoint, going down to the final ball to decide the winner. Scots College won by 3 runs to win the Hunt Family Trophy.

Thanks to all the boys for participating in such good spirits and to everyone who made it possible.

Big thanks to Jimmy Lawler for providing a great term of ‘Jimmy on the boundary’ interviews with our boys across all the grades. It has been great hearing insights into how the games have gone and what the season has meant to the boys. Thanks also to all the parents and managers who have taken the time to provide match reports, allowing us to highlight the breadth of play and talent that we have at WC.

Match report 21/03/26
J1 Gold vs J1 Black. J1 Black won by 5 wickets

Interview with Gaurav Prasad-Deo

Wellington College J1 Gold and J1 Black played out a high-quality contest on College Number 3 ground to close out their J1 grade season. With both sides occupying the top two positions on the table, the fixture effectively served as a grand final.

J1 Black captain Advaith Konteram won the toss and elected to bowl on what was an excellent batting surface. J1 Gold made a cautious start and were briefly under pressure, but Ekam Singh and Sam Olliver combined to steady the innings. Both batters retired after facing 40 balls, laying a strong platform for the middle order.

The innings was then lifted by Tristan Jeyathas, who produced an aggressive middle phase with an unbeaten 37, while Louis Bridgman added a valuable 25 from 23 deliveries. Ekam Singh returned to the crease later in the innings and went on to complete a well-earned half century, finishing with 59 from 58 balls. J1 Gold closed their innings on a competitive 242 from their 40 overs, having built momentum through partnerships and effective strike rotation.

For J1 Black, Aayan Khanulkaar and Ethan Lew were the standout bowlers, claiming two wickets each. Captain Advaith Konteram also delivered a disciplined spell, conceding just 7 runs from his 4 overs and maintaining control through the middle stages.

Chasing 243, J1 Black began steadily, with Advaith Konteram anchoring the top order with 28 and ensuring a solid start. Darshanabinav Selvakumar (24) and Oliver Williamson (23) contributed important runs to consolidate the innings and keep the required rate in check.

The momentum shifted decisively when Billy James took the attack to the bowlers, scoring a fluent 61 from 40 balls, including two sixes, to put J1 Black in a strong position. Oscar Johnston then played a composed and measured innings of 37 from 40 balls to guide the chase home and secure victory.

J1 Gold continued to compete throughout, with Zaine Deva and Louis Bridgman each taking two wickets to apply pressure at key moments. However, J1 Black’s depth and composure under chase conditions saw them complete the run chase successfully.

The match was played in excellent spirit, reflecting the values of Wellington College cricket, with both teams competing hard while maintaining strong camaraderie on the field. It was a fitting conclusion to the Term 1 season, showcasing both the quality and character of the players involved.

National School Boys 1st XI Cup Qualifier

Wellington College 1st XI vs St Patrick’s College Town 1st XI

A picture‑perfect Wellington day set the stage for a high‑stakes final. WC lost the toss and were sent into the field, with SPC eyeing a big total.

WC’s seamers started sharply, Saad Azhar striking in his first over. SPC rebuilt well, pushing to 106/1 before the breakthrough came in the 24th. Spin then swung the momentum, tightening the scoring and triggering a collapse—helped by three sharp run‑outs. A late burst of pace cleaned up the tail, leaving SPC shorter than they would have hoped for at 206 all out.

• Sam Thurlow 2–16
• Saad Azhar 2–43
• Oscar Dry 2–46

Chasing a modest target, WC knew early wickets would be SPC’s focus and they delivered, removing two key batters quickly. But Sagar Huluguda dug in, blunting the new‑ball threat and steadying the innings.

At the halfway mark WC needed a spark, and Sam Jones and Bruno Brown provided it, shifting the tempo and putting SPC under pressure. Bruno powered on to a superb 61, before Henry Von Dadelszen arrived and took the game on with a composed, rapid 42, swinging the match firmly back WC’s way. SPC fought to the end, but WC crossed the line with overs to spare.

A final packed with momentum swings, big moments, and packed out terraces.

• Bruno Brown 61 (79)
• Henry Von Dadelszen 42 (31)
• Sam Jones 26 (31)

Wellington College won by 3 wickets head down south to defend their National School Boys title in December.

WC 2nd XI v Hastings Boys' High School 2 day match report

The WC 2nd XI played their only two-day match of the season over Sunday and Monday. Following their strong showing on Saturday in a narrow three-run loss to St Pats Town 1sts, the 2nds hosted Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XI. It was a strong Hastings side, having recently beaten Napier Boys’ 1sts, so WC knew they faced a tough challenge.

WC lost the toss and were asked to bowl but made an excellent start, with Jethro striking in the opening over. Jethro, Nick, Arlo and Isaac bowled tight lines to restrict HBHS to just two runs an over for the first 25, with Jethro and Nick each picking up another wicket in the first session. As the HBHS batsmen began to gain some control, Inniyan broke a key partnership by removing both set batters, and Isaac added another important wicket. Nick then cleaned up the tail as HBHS tried to accelerate, and they were dismissed for 180 in 62 overs. Jethro’s figures of 11 overs, 6 maidens, 9 runs and 3 wickets were outstanding, while Nick claimed an impressive 4/44.

WC’s reply began steadily, with Matthew, Saurav and Shivam showing patience at the top of the order against some hostile bowling. Shivam was the standout, producing a superb, chanceless 124 to convert his season-long promise into a dominant innings. Boosted by Isaac’s brisk 50*, WC declared at 251/7 after 65 overs, holding a lead of 71.

With less than two sessions remaining, forcing a result was going to be difficult, but WC’s bowlers delivered again with the support of some attacking field placements. Jethro, Arlo and Nick removed the top order, before Hadlee ran through the middle with four wickets in an unbroken 13-over spell. Inniyan and stand-in keeper Ben combined for an excellent stumping and Jethro returned to bowl out HBHS for 149 with just under an hour left.

WC were left with a challenging target of 79 from 15 overs, but Henry set the tone by smashing ten runs from the first over. With positive contributions also from Matthew and Shivam, WC reached the target with five overs to spare, losing only two wickets.

This was an outstanding achievement to secure an outright victory inside two days against a very strong Hastings Boys’ side, and a fitting way to finish the season in which the team was improving every match.

Shoutout to groundsman Tom for a great two-day pitch that offered something to both batters and bowlers, and thanks to all the WC students for providing such a great atmosphere on the terraces during the school breaks.

HBHS 1st innings: 180 /10 (N Wallace: 4/44; J Elliot 3/9)

WC 1st innings: 251/7 (S Mistry 124; I Thompson 50*)

HBHS 2nd innings: 149/10 (H Maurd 4/53; A Fisher 2/25; J Elliot 2/32)

WC 2nd inning: 79/2 (H von Dadelszen 34)

Result: WC 2nds win outright by 8 wickets

Match report 14 March grade semifinal JP Gold vs HIBS Colts - HIBS won by 5 wickets

Anticipation was high leading into semi-final 2 of the Wellington cricket junior premier grade. WC Gold had met HIBS Colts the week before, with game going down to the last ball - highlighting that the semi-final was anyone's to win.

WC Gold won the toss and chose to bat. The top order got off to a strong start, putting 97 on the board for the loss of 5 wickets at the 20 over mark. Hunter Hearn top scored with a well-composed 37. But an inspired spell of bowling from Gethin Dodd (5-19) left WC Gold short of runs, having to defend 125.

WC Gold bowled tight lines and never let HIBS Colts settle into their innings, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Toby Calder bowled a fiery spell (3-18) and was well supported by other bowlers. That said, 125 was a few short of a competitive total and HIBS chased down the runs in the 29th over.

Match report: Wellington College Y9/10 Colts vs Napier Boys High Y9/10 Colts, Monday 9 March at Napier.

We started with a beautiful day in Napier, arriving at the grounds to the mowers on the pitch and fresh paint on the crease. The wicket is looked very green, a bit of dew on the ground, and plenty of grass in the outfield. Napier won the toss and elected to bowl.

In the first spell NBH put down some accurate pace bowling with very little bounce off the wicket. Not many opportunities, and Oscar Hill and Varun Karthik Agathamudi did well to handle quite a bit of variable movement from the ball and get WC close to 50 off a tricky wicket.

The first half was slow going with WC 77/4 after 20 overs. However not long after in the 23rd over Jay Wankhade got a gleam in his eye as NPB brought their spin bowlers in, hitting three boundaries for a total of 15 runs off the over. This marked the ramp for a solid middle partnership for Oliver de Haast and Jay, taking the total to 165/4 until a powerful shot by Oliver was caught just on the square leg boundary by NBH co-captain Cooper Diack.

WC lifted a gear going into the last 15 overs led by Jay, who was putting pressure on the NB bowlers, charging down the wicket and hitting over the fielders to find the rope.

NBH attempted some some tactical play in the last 6 overs, tightening the field, trying to manage the strike actively and lockdown the last few overs.

Despite this with plenty of wickets in hand the WC tempo went up, Jay supported by a solid 15 off 13 balls from Hunter Hearn.

The last over saw Jay bring up his 100 with a giant arching six over long on, and a fitting celebration for a superb innings from WC captain Jay Wankhade, finishing up 102 off 97 balls.

WC totalled 214 for NBH to chase, with 28 from Oliver de Haast the second-best contribution after the captain.

The field was drying off and the Hawkes Bay sun heating up as WC took the field. Opening bowlers Imran Quazi and Theo Baguley started with a solid pace attack holding NBH to 24-1 off the first 8 overs.

Following with their own set piece Lachlan Best and Carter Lawrence saw off the next 6 NBH batters with some pressure bowling, good catches and a tidy runout through quick hands from Jay Wankhade and Keeper Isaac Churchouse as NBH tried to squeeze an extra run from a misfield.

NBH was 55/7 at drinks and had a long haul to win with more than 150 runs to get off the next 20 overs.

Spinners Oscar Hill and Varun Karthik Agathamudi started the second half with a roar, confounding the NBH tail enders and taking the last 3 wickets within nine deliveries - two bowled by Varun and a class C&B by Oscar.

With only six runs scored since drinks, NBH was all done 81/10 in the 24th over. Excellent traditional success for the Wellington College Y9/10 Colts, winning by 153 runs.

Match report 14/03 - JP black vs yr 9/10 St Patrick’s college 1. Yr 9/10 SPC 1 won by 7 wickets

Played at Rongotai college, a good bouncy wicket, very different to Happy valley. Against a strong St Pats team. We loss the toss and were put into bat. We probably would have done the same as ground was damp and wicket was damp as well and skidded through at one end in particular which made it tough to score. St Pats bowled really well with pace and accuracy and we never really got away with the bat. Good solid start but need to work on rotating the strike and turning good balls from the bowlers into ones rather than dots . This was like this throughout the innings. We did well to bat the 40 but 108 was never going to be enough . We started well with the ball and a runout was good. Put the pressure back on them and with a couple of dropped catches off the partnership which really took the game away. If those catches had stuck they could have been 50/5 and we could have squeezed. Good team effort, boys attitude was great and heaps of effort in the field (although a few were tired from the runathon). The better team won on the day, with the toss also helping a little.

14 March match report P4 gold vs St Patrick’s college 3rd XI - WC won by 65 runs

Interview with VK Agathamudi

P4 Gold won the toss and chose to bat on a slippery pitch and outfield. The boys put their brand new umpire training into force with the first three wickets falling LBW…to the usual mixed reactions. Varun Agathamudi came to the crease with the score on 18 and batted very well for his 56, supported in good partnerships by Theo Fountain and Felix Barber. After a flurry of wickets Charlie Kettle came in at 124-7 with the batting side in trouble. He batted nicely and finished 31 not out, with all of the lower order contributing to finish on 195/9. In the second innings the pitch and outfield had dried out. Imran Qazi and Harry Maitland led the attack and put the St Pats team under pressure from the start - and they never really got on top of the chase. Imran finished with a 4 wicket bag and Felix Barber with 3. Harry bowled very well and was unlucky to end up with just one wicket, could easily have been more. St Pats were all out for 130. Really good game to end the season played with very good spirit and sportsmanship from both sides
