Fun Fair Isle Knitting WORKSHOP coming up soon at MACC.
A fun 2 – 3 day knitting workshop with tutor, John Nielsen
(with HOMEWORK!) Suitable for beginners and more experienced knitters.
Session 1: Sunday 4th October, 10am – 4pm - $70
Session 2: Sunday 11th October, 10am – 4pm - $40

John will have lots of books, yarn, tools to view and use if needed.

NEW DATE - Printing on Clay with Jenny Turnbull has been rescheduled for Sunday August 23rd.
Join Jenny - an experienced tutor and accomplished NZ potter - for this interesting workshop where you will learn how to transfer printed images onto clay.

For this workshop you will need to bring prepared leather-hard clay (slabs, plates or vessels with flat surfaces) and photocopied images. Other materials will be provided.

Images for Printing
Have your photocopied images ready (*leave a white edge around the image to hold).
Ordinary 80gsm paper is fine. Some printers use 100gsm, this paper takes longer to work but is reuseable.
• Images/photographs/drawings need to be photocopied to work in this process. It is the properties of the photocopy ink which is essential for the process to work, it’s the toner in the printers that’s key, (laser copiers are okay but not bubble jet (home) printers).
• Remember to reverse an image if you want it the right way around when printed or if it contains words.
• Line drawings, good black and white contrast photos will work.
• Have several copies of the same images, so if you make a mistake, you have some back-ups.

Clay

Prepare your clay slabs (or vessels, plates or cylinders) ahead of time.
The clay needs to leather hard, but not too hard or dry and have a smooth surface for best
possible registration of prints. Bring a rubber kidney if you have one to remove texture.

White clay gives best results. If you don't have white clay, a white slip can be applied before printing. If you can’t prepare your clay before the workshop – don’t sweat, you can make some slabs at the beginning of the workshop and let them firm up.

Please wear an apron or clothes that can get a bit messy.

Bring your own lunch - tea and coffee provided.

PRINTING on CLAY - A workshop with Jennifer Turnbull at MACC
Sunday August 9th, 10am - 4pm

This workshop is based on a lithograph printing technique. It relies on the fact that water and grease do not mix.

The workshop will show you how to transfer photocopied images onto a clay surface, which can then be fired, with or without glaze. It is called the “poor man’s lithography" process, and it is a technique that can be used in place of screen printing or other transfer techniques.

Images for Printing
Have several photocopied images ready (*leave a white edge around the image to hold).
It pays to get your images copied at a commercial printer; this guarantees your images will work. 80gsm paper is the best. Some printers use 100gsm, this paper takes longer to work but is re-useable.

WORKSHOP - An opportunity to design and make some bespoke earrings with silversmith, Rholene Singleton. You will receive a small bag of the materials you need to make your earrings, either like those pictured, or according to your own design. There will be plenty to make two pairs.

Design and create two pairs of dangling earrings using sterling silver, copper and brass metals. In this workshop you'll make two pairs of earrings that you can wear as soon as the workshop is over, and you’ll learn a range of traditional silver-smithing techniques, including how to:

* Use a jeweller’s saw to cut designs out of your metal

* Use a blowtorch safely to solder your metals together

* Add your own textures and patterns with hammers and tools, or add names with letter stamps

* Finish your earrings with a patina to highlight the textures

You’ll leave with two pairs of stunning dangling earrings ready to wear everyday.

Your Workshop Includes

* guided tuition and demonstrations to make two pairs of earrings

* Sterling silver, Copper or Brass plate and wire

* Solder, saw blades, sandpaper

Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, no loose long sleeves or scarfs, and tie back long hair. This is for your own safety while we use the blowtorch to solder your pieces.

You are welcome to take a short break whenever you feel the need for it. Tea, coffee and a few light snacks will be available, but please bring your own lunch if you think the day will get too long without a proper meal.

Fern's Leather-craft Workshop - June 6th. There are still some spots left for this upcoming workshop at MACC where you will create your own bespoke item from vegetable tanned leather. Choose from a range of options including (but not limited to) wallet, belt, small bag, knife-sheath, multi-tool case, or bring your own design.
The workshop covers pattern-making, embossing and tool designs, dyeing and other basic aspects of leather-craft and leather care.
Cost is $140
All materials provided and afternoon tea.
