Update Thursday 31 July 07:45pm | No changes to the current advisory in force for Auckland. South Island and Cook Strait are no longer under the advisory.
❗Please be advised that strong and unusual currents on the eastern side of New Zealand are likely to remain overnight. This includes Whangarei, Great Barrier Island, the East Coast of Auckland, Waiheke Island and Waitemata Harbour.

************************************************* Update Thursday 31 July 4.00pm | As per the latest advisory from NZ Civil Defence, the areas under the National Advisory and experiencing strong and unusual currents have reduced. Due to rebounding tsunami activity from South America, the east coast of both the North and South Islands and the Chatham Islands remain under a National Advisory, and are likely to remain so overnight.
The West Coast of the South Island, and Cook Strait, meet the threshold for the National Advisory to remain in place however, the tsunami activity threat is at the low end of the scale.
Auckland's West Coast no longer meets the threshold of the advisory.
❗Please be advised that strong and unusual currents on the eastern side of New Zealand may be present for another 24 hours.
The next update is expected around 7.30pm this evening, and these areas will be reviewed and updated at this time.

Update Thursday 31 July 8.50am | All Civil Defence Centres are now closed.
❗ Reminder that tsunami advisory by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is still in place for Auckland region.
- Stay away from beaches and out of the water until all warnings are lifted
- Evacuation onshore is not needed
- People in boats, live-aboards and at marinas should remain onshore, unless directed otherwise

Following the tsunami advisory issued by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), we may expect strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore from midnight tonight.
🚤 If you live aboard a vessel, we advise staying with friends and whānau tonight. If that is not an option, please make your way to one of our Civil Defence Centres (CDCs). We have four CDCs open for live-aboard residents from 8.30pm until 8am on Thursday 31 July.
🏠 Civil Defence Centres will offer basic facilities like shelter and light snacks and some basic sleeping options like inflatable mattresses
👕 Please bring warm clothing and any essential items like medicines, baby and children’s items and special food items you may need
♿️🐶All Civil Defence Centres are wheelchair accessible and a small number of pets can be accommodated
