Genesis Youth Trust Genesis Youth Trust
Supporting positive outcomes for rangatahi and their whanau

Our long term objective is to reduce re-offending, including serious and persistent offending, by addressing the causes underlying the offending, by engaging our clients into education, employment, training and connecting them into positive community activities. Each life so transformed is of immeasurable value to the individual, their family or whanau and those who otherwise would become the victims of crimes.

When Genesis Youth Trust works with rangatahi, they don’t just change one life, they change the lives of entire whanāu.
A brilliant example of this is one of our new Youth Mentors, Lillian, whose own life was changed when Genesis social workers and mentors worked with her two brothers after they came to the attention of Police four years ago.
“Genesis didn’t just help them, they worked with our whole family and when they found out I was driving without having a licence, they put me through driver training and helped me get my learner’s,” says Lillian.
“That really did put me on a different path - I had this huge sense of accomplishment and it gave me the confidence to go on and get my full licence,” she says. “I finished high school and decided I wanted to work with young people and help them too.”
Lillian went to MIT and studied health and wellbeing, a precursor to the social work degree she says is her ultimate goal. Now she’s gaining practical experience as a youth mentor with Genesis in Manukau.
“I’ve got four clients I work with and I totally understand their lives and their challenges and how we can help them because that was my life too,” says Lillian. “It’s about getting them out of the house and into healthy activities and also connecting them with the services they or their family needs.”
GYT CEO Henare Clarke says mentors like Lillian can quickly build trust with vulnerable young people. “It’s so rewarding to see someone whose life was changed for the better through Genesis, now work with us to change other people’s lives.” Welcome to the team Lillian!

When we say that Genesis Youth Trust employs the most skilled and compassionate people to work with our rangatahi, we are talking about people like the enormously caring and talented Daniel Paea who this month is celebrating not only becoming a new Team Leader in Papakura, but also graduating with a Masters in Applied Practice alongside his Bachelor of Social Work.
Daniel has worked with more than 100 vulnerable youth in his six years with Genesis, and is taking the lead in our Papakura branch, managing the unique multidisciplinary teams of social workers, counsellors and mentors who wrap around young people and their whanau to set them up for a better future.
“I see it as being like an artist,” he says of the “privileged” work he does with Genesis. “We are helping to paint a new portrait of a young person, help them grow in self-esteem, mentor them back into education or work, and we keep them out of the justice system which is the real reward. It’s a blessing to be able to do this work.”
GYT’s Chief Executive Henare Clarke says Daniel is a huge asset to the team. “He brings hope and restoration to our rangatahi and their whanau, leads from the front and is generous with his time in the community, despite how busy he is!”
Daniel, who grew up in Otara, has spent the past four years working towards his Masters, and his thesis titled "Contributing factors for young Tongan youth offenders in South Auckland" has been supported by Genesis’ leadership.
“Poverty, drugs and alcohol, low socio-economics are all contributing factors as with any young person but for many New Zealand-born Tongans they are also dealing with the issue of having a dual identity - they are Tongan in New Zealand and Pakeha in Tonga. That can bring its own real challenges.” Congratulations Daniel - how lucky are we all to have you.

As we reflect back on the successes of 2024, at the core of our Genesis Youth Trust results are our multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) - our own social workers, mentors and counsellors who work together, wrapping around vulnerable rangatahi and their whānau, transforming lives and impacting the whole community. Together they create a unified plan for a young person at the most critical time in their lives, growing strong and trusting relationships that affect real change. Counselling is at the heart of this plan. As our amazing Mangere counsellor Leah Lutau (below) says, counselling is critical to dealing with anger management, depression, anxiety and relationship issues which are often at the heart of behavioral problems. We couldn’t do this important work without the support of our partners New Zealand Police, Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children, Ministry of Social Development NZ (MSD), Karen Chhour MP, Nicola Willis MP, Mark Mitchell MP.

These three statements, penned by a Genesis Youth Trust rangatahi in our Building Awesome Whānau programme offers great advice to anyone starting 2025 strong. Moving on from mistakes, seeing opportunity in really challenging situations and building a better future are goals we can all aspire to, but especially young people at a critical time in their lives. Recommended to our programmes by police, rangatahi are cared for by our highly skilled mentors, counsellors and social workers through an intensive seven-week programme which prevents crimes, sets young people on a new path and impacts whole communities. Genesis has been changing lives for 25 years but we couldn’t do it without New Zealand Police, agencies like Oranga Tamariki and Ministry of Social Development NZ, and values-led businesses who support this critical work. We’ll share more stories of this important work throughout 2025.
