Phew, what an incredible two weeks!

It's about time for the biggest thanks of all, which has got to go to these four incredible wahine.

Alex has been working hard behind the scenes to capture data on the whole event, so Manaaki Whenua can see what incredible agents of change artists and their art can be. Clearly an expert multitasker, she even did it while growing a wee apprentice in her puku (congrats Alex!).

Sarah and Holly, collectively Olearia Design, have nurtured this ever-evolving kaupapa since February and poured their love for art, the environment and Lyttelton itself into every exhibit. Many of you will have met them along the way and no doubt witnessed their infectious passion for what they do.

Lastly, Know Your Place wouldn't have become the incredible success it did without the Queen Agent of Change herself, Melissa. She supported not only the work but the people themselves, saying 'yes' at every turn. We're so lucky to have had her at the helm, if anyone has a secret cloning machine in their garage please send us a dm!

Ngā mihi nui, we can't thank you enough 💚

Our group exhibition at Te Whare o Rei / Rei Gallery is on again!

Today (Fri): 11am - 2pm
Saturday: 11am - 3pm
Sunday: 11am - 2pm

Rei is a Māori owned and operated gallery under local mana whenua Kāti Wheke, located in the Whakaraupō bay.

Within Rei is a collective of artists who are committed to pushing boundaries, generating conversation, and creating new possibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As carvers, sculptors, painters, and weavers, their aims are to support emerging, mid-career, and established artists in Ōtautahi. As an extension of Whakaraupō Carving Centre, the idea behind Rei is to include individuals and groups from all backgrounds who are a part of Te Ao Māori. They aim to create pathways and opportunities for rangatahi who show an affinity for toi Māori, and increase it’s visibility in te Waipounamu.

Make sure you head over to check out all the stunning artwork before the exhibition closes.

Know Your Place couldn't happen without the support of our hapori/community, and some deserve an extra special shout out.

Sabrina and the Naval Point Club Lyttelton have supported us the whole way through this creation process - hosting Penguin Peninsula workshops and exhibits, the Guardians of Whakaraupō Family Day and Guardians of Whakaraupō Speaker Series. Sabrina has also gone above and beyond to help with advertising and logistics - thank you so much!!!

Don't forget you can still see the 🐧 Penguin Peninsula 🐧 this weekend - from 10am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday. And make sure you check out the Naval Point Club website to see what they're up to next: https://www.navalpoint.co.nz/home

A huge thanks to Predator Free Port Hills for all their help during Know Your Place!

PFPH were a co-host for the Penguin Penninsula Whānau Day, where they helped make 25 rat traps to keep our wildlife safe. They were also the co-host (along with Naval Point Club Lyttelton) of the Guardians of Whakaraupō Speaker Series on Sunday night.

Predator Free Port Hills, an initiative of the Summit Road Society, is dedicated to protecting our native species by involving the community in predator control. Seabirds like the kororā (little blue penguin) are often overlooked in protection from predators but are just as vital as land birds. Their shoreline nests make their eggs and chicks especially vulnerable, so community support is crucial.

They joined Know Your Place and Penguin Peninsula because creating a safe environment for our taonga species takes everyone’s effort, and we need to find innovative ways to reach a different crowd. Art helps us reach people in new and engaging ways.

Ngā mihi nui e hoa mā!
