Here is the Coalition for the Safety of Women & Children’s “20 steps from violence towards freedom” scorecard to help inform your vote. Twenty-four violence-prevention NGOs (including our organisation) called on 7 parties to commit to 8 steps to halt and reverse the damage of the last three years, as well as 12 new steps to move us forward.
The steps include: improving police culture; restoring Oranga Tamariki’s Tiriti responsibilities; creating a specialist Family Court for sexual and family violence; online safety regulation; stalking prevention; protection for migrant women; restoring and strengthening Relationships and Sexuality Education; restoring pay equity, with back pay and interest; and scrapping the gender definitions bill while closing the gaps in hate speech law.
The results:
Four parties did not respond, including the three parties in the current government.
See the parties’ own comments on each of the individual steps here, which we will update at the end of the month if new policies are announced.
We thank the three parties GREEN PARTY of Aotearoa NZ 💚 New Zealand Labour Party Te Paati Māori o Aotearoa who responded for taking the time and effort to show commitment, or at least interest, in women’s, children’s and community rights to freedom from violence.
Please share our scorecard with all voters you know who care about women, children, and violence elimination!
