School of Hard Knocks is a youth development programme that supports rangatahi in their journey towards employment or further training.

Last Thursday, our rangatahi had an epic adventure at Otarawairere Bay, near Ohope! From learning the art of spear fishing to exploring rock pools, rock diving, and swimming after an awesome hikoi along the Nga Tapuwae o Toi trail, it was a day packed full of fun, challenges and learning.

We’re all about giving our rangatahi the skills and confidence to step up in life – and these adventures are just one part of the journey!

Week 10 of the Licence to Mahi Program and what an epic finish! Our rangatahi had a blast at Motion Entertainment in Rotorua, fueled by delicious KFC. What a way to wrap up their journey!

With some amazing memories made and new skills gained, our rangatahi are ready to take on whatever comes next.

How epic was our classroom last Friday!
Our rangatahi had a blast on their excursion to Braemar Springs – an amazing day of adventure and bonding! These experiences are all about having fun, building confidence and opening new doors for our rangatahi’s future.

It’s been an action packed few weeks for our rangatahi! Having fun playing twilight bowls to learning waiata at Eastbay Reap Kawerau, every moment has been a step forward on their journey.

We also had an inspiring visit to the New Energy Solar Farm. Huge thanks to John Jobe and Dawie Kemp for showing us the ropes and keeping us safe on site!

To our rangatahi, let’s keep building confidence, skills, and opportunities together! 💪

A few weeks of mahi and fun with our incredible rangatahi! From giving back to our community by helping EastBay Reap Kawerau with food distribution, to learning new skills like playing guitar, cooking mince wraps, and getting creative with Halloween masks at Whakatane Heads 👻

We're all about whakawhanaungatanga, learning new life skills, and supporting each other on the journey to employment.

Huge congratulations to our Toiora Rangatahi! 🎉🚗

We’re celebrating some major achievements! All of our rangatahi passed their Learner’s Drivers Licence after 3 days of hard work at BayReap Kawerau.

Our rangatahi also received their IRD numbers, thanks to Rotorua IRD Community Compliance Officer and EastBay Reap Kawerau. A big step forward as they get ready for the workforce.

Meet Kyra Te Maioha Walker!

As our Program Manager and Employability Coach at Toiora, Kyra is dedicated to empowering our local communities and supporting at-risk youth. With a strong background in leadership and team management, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep cultural connection to her role.

Kyra designs impactful programs that support rangatahi in building life skills, work readiness, and career development. Her compassionate leadership shines through in every project, inspiring and uplifting those around her.

Had an amazing time celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori at Rangitihi Marae last month! 🌟

Huge thanks to the local kura for inviting us. It was wonderful to connect through waiata and embrace our shared culture. Our rangatahi, Phoenix and Ella, even learned how to make poi!

A Productive September for Our Toiora Rangatahi!

September was a fantastic month for our rangatahi as they participated in various activities designed to build confidence and support their journey towards employment.

🥡 Excursion to Kopeo Gibbos Fish n Chips
Our rangatahi enjoyed delicious kai at the beautiful Whakatāne heads. It was a great opportunity to hang out and get to know eachother.

💬 Inspirational Speaker: Matua Te Huia Paniora-Hepi
We were fortunate to have Matua Te Huia share his wisdom and experiences, inspiring our rangatahi to dream big and strive for success.

💪 Fitness Sessions with Mr. Marino Playle
Our youth leader, Mr. Marino Playle, led group fitness sessions that encouraged teamwork and resilience.

🏗️ Visit to Groundbase Solutions in Rotorua
Our rangatahi had an insightful visit to Groundbase Solutions, a civil and construction business specialising in bioenergy, earthworks, and traffic management. They learned about the importance of sustainable practices and the variety of career opportunities in the construction industry. We finished off with a delicious lunch lakeside.

Our 10-week program is designed to help our rangatahi learn practical skills that will empower their future and fast-track them into mahi. It involves hands-on workshops, trips to workplaces, cultural activities, fitness training and sport, and so much more.

Rangatahi will gain support and guidance from our coaches while they figure out their path through a mix of fun and challenging activities. Free kai and transport is included.
