Earlier this month at The Nurture School and our students had the opportunity to get involved in some environmental DNA (eDNA) testing with the support of the West Coast Catchment Programme and the West Coast Regional Council. It was great to have local ecologist, Richard Nichol, come and share his knowledge. We had fun learning more about our awa and doing the testing mahi.
The results from the eDNA testing will give us information about what species live in and around our awa and provide baseline information about the awa. The tests can pick up everything from large tuna (eels) to tiny macroinvertebrates.
The students are looking forward to receiving their results and using the eDNA data to make plans for further mahi in the area. It will be extra exciting if the kiwi in the area show up in the testing results.
Thanks to the Environmental Protection Authority NZ NZ’s Wai Tuwhera o te Taiao programme and Wilderlab for the eDNA kits.
