"Kia Ora,

My name is Chris Wake, your new Karori Community Constable!

I work in the Community Policing Team based in Johnsonville. This will be my 8th year in the Police, with my time spent on frontline and in the community space.

I have recently taken up the Karori portfolio, and am excited to get amongst it. If you see me out and about walking the beat, please come up and say hi as Iโ€™d love to chat with you. We have a few things we are planning in and around Karori, so stay tuned.

If you need to contact me with any thoughts in the meantime, you can email me at [email protected] and Iโ€™ll get back to you.

Ngฤ mihi
Chris"

Regarding search for local South Karori man -
We know people want to help, but donโ€™t rush down to South Karori in storm conditions.
Before any volunteer efforts, check with emergency services or the official search coordinator.
They need organised help, not chaos.
Your safety comes first, and coordination is key.
Call police non emergency line 105 for more information.

9.45am -Mon 20th April - A quick update as the weather system continues.
Overnight rain has already caused flooding across parts of the south, and weโ€™re expecting another heavy band through this afternoon and into tomorrow.
For those in Karori, South Coast and across the west, please take this seriously. With this level of sustained rain, slips and surface flooding are a real risk.
Key things to know:
โ€ข Donโ€™t drive through floodwater
โ€ข Watch for slips, debris, and lifted manhole covers
โ€ข Avoid parks, reserves, and exposed coastal areas
โ€ข If youโ€™re concerned about a landslide, evacuate early if itโ€™s safe to do so
If you need support, the Wellington City Mission in Mt Cook is open for shelter.
There has also been a wastewater discharge into Karori Stream, so avoid contact with the water there and along the south coast for now.
If itโ€™s not urgent, report issues to Council on 04 499 4444 or via FixIt.

Stay Safe During the Cyclone

With severe weather on the way, nowโ€™s a good time to look out for both people and pets in our community.

- Bring pets indoors or ensure they have warm, dry, secure shelter
- Check fences and gates are secure & bring side or weigh down things that may fly around your yard
- Keep dogs on leads when out and about
- Watch for debris, fallen branches, and slippery surfaces
- Check in on neighbours, especially those who live alone or may need a hand
- If you see anything concerning while youโ€™re out, report it to the appropriate services.

Letโ€™s all do our bit to keep Karori safe.

Due to an increase in property stolen from parked cars in and around the Kelburn area this post is a timely reminder to help prevent thefts from our cars!

Never leave valuables in plain sight in your car. Ideally always take your items with you when parked up. If you must leave items, secure them in your boot.

Ensure your doors and windows are locked and try park in a well-lit, or high traffic area if not in a locked garage. Itโ€™s also a good time to review your car insurance policies to ensure you are covered.

Stay vigilant and look out for each other. If you see a car getting broken into

Police Remembrance Day is held every year on 29 September, the feast day of the Archangel Michael, the Patron Saint of Police.

Each year a national Service is held to honour Police colleagues in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific, who have been killed by criminal acts while performing their official duties, or died as a result of their duties, as well as serving, retired and former New Zealand Police staff who have passed away in the preceding 12 months.

The national service is held at The Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC) and a number of local services will be also be held across New Zealand.

Police officers killed by criminal acts while performing their official duties are remembered in the Roll of Honour read out at each Service. Their service and commitment to the New Zealand Police is remembered and honoured.

The national Remembrance Day service held at the RNZPC will be livestreamed on the New Zealand Police page.

The livestream will be recorded and will remain on the page to watch after the service.
