Ko Rhonda Raharuhi ahau.

How long have you lived in Te Hiku?

Since I was 15, I’ve called Whatuwhiwhi home, I whakapapa to Māngamuka, Whirinaki & Waitakere. Ngāti Kahu is where my kids whakapapa to - where my kids and hubby are is where my heart is.

Where is your favourite place to watch the sunrise?

I’m definitely more of a sunset person, haha. One of my favourite spots to watch the sun go down is from the top of Puheke - pure magic up there. For sunrise though, driving along Inland Road watching the sun come up is pretty special too.

If you had whānau visiting, where’s one local kai spot you’d take them?

Definitely Manaaki on 25. The vibes are awesome, the outdoor setting is beautiful and the kai is always reka!

What drives your passion for community involvement?

Sport has always been a huge part of my life, especially with my own tamariki. It teaches so much more than just the game: teamwork, resilience, discipline, confidence and connection. I’ve been involved in netball since I was young, and now women’s rugby too. Both come with challenges, but seeing people step outside their comfort zones, conquer fears, grow in confidence, and become stronger versions of themselves that’s the real reward for me. That’s the cup filler.

One word to describe our community?

Tāonga.
Because our people, our places and the way we show up for each other are truly special.

Since starting in Kaitāia in 2014, The Moko Foundation has been working to empower tamariki and whānau Māori through health, education and leadership programmes. Guided by kaupapa Māori values, the team connects rangatahi with opportunities that build confidence, capability and leadership.

Their mission is to create innovative solutions that connect young people with opportunities, strengthen Māori communities and help increase Māori representation in health, science, research and leadership spaces. The Moko Foundation also partners with researchers and scientists to stay connected with the latest public health developments, helping create pathways for rangatahi to see what is possible for their future.

Recently, The Moko Foundation took a group of Year 11 students from Taipa Area School and Kaitaia College to Tāmaki Makaurau, where tauira explored a range of future pathways and opportunities beyond school.

The group visited the University of Auckland, AUT and MIT campuses, connected with the New Zealand Warriors Foundation, explored trades and hands-on learning at New Zealand Management Academies, visited TVNZ to gain insight into media and broadcasting, and learned about engineering and future-focused careers with Beca. They also had the opportunity to visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Experiences like these help rangatahi see what is possible for their future while building confidence, aspiration and new connections.

You can find The Moko Foundation in the Te Hiku Local Directory or via their social media channels.

Proudly Local | Proudly Te Hiku

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Peter Malcolm Jackson. My father came here in the early 1930s, but on my mother's side I am descended from the missionaries Joseph Matthews and William Gilbert Puckey, so my family has been here since 1834. My roots are well and truly here, and I cannot imagine living anywhere else.

What do you love most about living in Te Hiku?

The best thing about living here is that I feel part of the community.
The fact that I was the editor of the Northland Age for 38 years adds to this feeling of belonging. It is also a community that has many
issues that should be dealt with, but we can be truly united, when the cause is right, such as in the 1990s, when it seemed likely that we would lose Kaitaia Hospital. When needs must, this community really can stand together, rich and poor, Maori and Pakeha. It is not at all
difficult to be truly proud of this community.

Where’s your favourite place visit, eat or drink in Te Hiku?

My favourite place to eat or drink is at home, or anywhere that sells steak and cheese pies. I have a weakness for steak and cheese pies.
This will be why I am not as skinny as I used to be. When I was a child, steak and cheese pies hadn't been invented. There is also a cafe in Tirau that does an amazing cooked breakfast.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I like to grow roses. My ambition is to grow one that becomes a champion at the national spring show. I used to enjoy fishing too, but haven't done that for some time.

What is one local gem or special place in Te Hiku that more people should know about?

My special place is hardly a secret; 90 Mile Beach. My parents had a bach in the dunes when I was a child, and school holidays there were the happiest days of my life. Any beach is good, but 90 Mile will
always be special to me. I would love to have given my children and grandchildren the experienced I had there, but those days, sadly, have gone.
