Congratulation to Joanne Wagner who yesterday completed what was needed to officially became a Coastguard Instructor.
By growing our own instructors, we're strengthening the operational capability of our unit and ensuring the long-term sustainability of training right here in Whangaroa. This means our volunteers can continue to learn, develop, and progress their knowledge and skills, helping build a stronger, safer, and more capable Coastguard team for years to come.

Congratulations, Jo, on this well-deserved achievement. Your commitment to supporting others and sharing your knowledge will make a real difference to our members and, ultimately, to the safety of everyone on the water in our community.

A huge thank you as well to all of our volunteers who continue to invest their time, energy, and passion into making Coastguard Whangaroa the great unit it is. Every new instructor, every new crew member, and every new skill learned helps ensure we're ready to answer the call when our community needs us most.

The second call out for Kahurangi was to Paradise Bay north of Taupo Bay to assist a boat with mechanical issues. Another boatie was soon on his way to return safely home. As we made our way back we were treated to a beautiful sunset. So lucky to experience natures beauty while assisting others.

βš“πŸŒŠ Safe Boating on Whangaroa Harbour πŸŒŠβš“

Navigating Whangaroa Harbour is a beautiful experience but staying safe out there is what makes it a memorable one for all the right reasons.

Here's what Coastguard Whangaroa recommends before you head out:

βœ… Check conditions first
Local weather and tide schedules can change quickly on the harbour, so always check before you leave.

βœ… Carry the essentials
Life jackets for every passenger, working flares, and a functioning VHF radio so you can stay in touch with Coastguard if needed.

βœ… Know the harbour
Familiarise yourself with the navigation channels and watch for hazards like submerged rocks and shifting sandbanks.

βœ… Log your trip
Let a responsible person know your plans, and never exceed your boat's capacity.

βœ… Call if you need us
In an emergency, don't hesitate to call for assistance. A safe journey is a successful one.

By following these simple guidelines, you help keep everyone on the water safe and looking out for one another. πŸ’™

πŸŒŠβš“ Winter Boating Preparedness Tips from Coastguard Whangaroa βš“πŸŒŠ

As the colder months set in, a bit of extra preparation goes a long way on the water. Here are our top tips to keep you and your crew safe this season:

βœ… Check Your Gear
Before heading out, inspect all your safety equipment. Make sure life jackets are in good condition, flares aren't expired, and your VHF radio is working properly. Cold waters call for extra vigilance.

βœ… Weather Awareness
Winter weather in Whangaroa can change fast. Always check the latest forecast before setting out, and be ready to adjust your plans if conditions shift.

βœ… Dress Appropriately
Layer up with warm, waterproof clothing. Hypothermia is a real risk in cold, wet conditions, so make sure everyone on board can stay dry and warm.

βœ… Engine & Fuel Checks
Cold conditions are tough on engines. Do your routine maintenance and check fuel levels to avoid breakdowns out on the water.

βœ… Share Your Plans
Always let someone onshore know your itinerary, departure time, route, and expected return. It means someone can raise the alarm if things don't go to plan.

Stay prepared, stay safe, and enjoy everything Whangaroa Harbour has to offer this winter. 🚀

If you ever need us, we're just a call away on VHF Channel 16. βš“
