MPMW Poitukohu:
MPMW Poitukohu Club was created in Invercargill, February 2016 by Marcus Tuwairua (Kati Mamoe, Ngati Kahungunu, Ngai Tuhoe) who was born in Invercargill and raised in Glengarry and Ritchmond. After returning to Invercargill in 2016 after having lived in Dunedin between 2004 till 2014 and then studying for two years at Te Wananga o Raukawa in Otaki, Kapiti Coast, The original initiative was something that stemmed from the philosophies developed by what he'd studied at TWOR (2014, 2015). The idea was to start a social Basketball Team which could offer a safe place to enhance and strengthen individual's interests in regards Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga as well, enjoy playing a bit of basketball. After the summer social basketball competition in 2016 had finished, the Southland A Grade Basketball Competition was nearing. The idea to throw together a couple of teams for the A Grade competitions came about in hope that it would perhaps draw more Te Reo enthusiasts or learners into the mix to 'whakamana te kaupapa' (give rise to the cause). In this competition we entered 3 teams...
The MPMW Taniwhas, MPMW Wahine Toa and The MPMW Turbos. The MPMW Turbos 2016:
===================
Were made up out of members of a regular social basketball team 'The Turbos' which is often organised by Ben Kelly. they became allies and became a strong A Grade competition component for the development of our club. The MPMW Wahine Toa 2016:
=======================
comprised of female players from the original 'Mixed MPMW Summer Social League' line-up, and with the help of Patrice Spencer-Humm, MPMW were able to gather members of the Southern Steel Netball Team to play for them. Well known netball stars like Janine Watson, Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit, Jamie Hume and Abbey Erwood, all played in most of the games for the Womens A grade competition. Although the MPMW Wahine Toa never recorded a win, they would only lose their games by an average of 2 points every time. With the Southern Steel netball season finishing before the end of the A Grade Basketball competitions, MPMW Wahine Toa fizzled near the end of it with remaining games turning into byes. Hopefully, in future we can bring back a womens team to the A Grade competition. MPMW Taniwhas, 2016:
==================
The MPMW Taniwhas of 2016 were that team that worked pretty good together throughout the majority of the season. Near the end of the season however, there had been a bit of in team dynamics with certain players not willing to pay fees and help out with fundraising and such. This caused the team to come apart. A handful of the players in this team went off to create their own social teams and are doing quite nicely with their contribution to the sport here in Invercargill. Three remaining players from the 2016 MPMW Taniwhas are entering again in the upcoming 2017 competition with a few new recruits to be added the team. After the A Grade competition in 2016, the Spring Mixed Social Basketball Competition arrived and a crew of basketballers who took the name 'The MPMW Blazers' represented the club in this competition. These guys did very well, getting 3rd place overall in this particular competition. We hope to see more from the MPMW Blazers in future. The Turbos entered the competition under their own umbrella too.. Mixed Summer Social 2017 in May, has been coming to an end. Whilst nobody played in this competition under the MPMW Poitukohu umbrella this time round, some of the Turbos players will surely benefit from this in the upcoming A Grade competition for 2017.

The teams that will be entering in the 2017 A Grade Competition are:
MPMW / Eastern Suburbs TURBOS
&
MPMW / Eastern Suburbs TANIWHAS
Every A Grade competition there is to be a 'local derby' between these two teams. MPMW Turbos hold the 'MPMW Poitukohu Waka' Trophy for 2016. Southland A Grade Basketball starts end of May, 2017.
