Holding Hands with a Ghost | Hazel Smith
Open event 5.30pm Friday 5 June
Exhibition runs until 11 July 2026

With her latest work “Holding Hands with a Ghost” Southland and Otago based artist Hazel Smith invites you to look introspectively into the past. Hazel's work focuses on the symbolic and whimsical, using them as ways to explore concepts that we can't quite grasp onto.

Previously she has looked at ideas and concepts such as memory with “Memory is Blue” and nostalgia with “Nostalgia is Pink”. More recently has exhibited at Arts Murihiku where the concept of the unknown was explored with “Sanctifying the Fog” - which sought to make peace or at least an understanding with the unknown, a concept which can feel unsettling. In her latest exhibition at Art Attic, Hazel delves into the idea of confronting and illuminating the ghosts that stay with us long after their first encounter. Like with the concept of the unknown she hopes to find a means to bring peace to this way of viewing the past.

We're excited to share about workshops with Jessica Covell at South Invercargill Community Art Space.

Workshop Sessions:
Friday 22nd May 2026
10.30am - 12pm, and 4.30pm - 6pm
No cost, Bookings required
Email: [email protected]

Join Jessica Covell for a hands-on tufting workshop exploring collaborative textile-making through wool, texture, and place.

Participants will have the opportunity to try tufting on a large-scale shared artwork: a simple map of South Invercargill created collectively throughout the session.

Because tufting is a physical art form that involves handling specialised equipment, this workshop is recommended for ages 12 to 24. Younger participants who feel confident and capable are also welcome to have a turn with guidance.

Alongside the tufting activity, participants can explore weaving with wool using handmade stick looms in a relaxed, drop-in style activity suitable for a range of ages and experience levels.

Workshop Sessions:
Friday 22nd May 2026
10.30am - 12pm, and 4.30pm - 6pm
No cost, Bookings required

When the external world gets fast, loud and chaotic, how do you find your anchor?

Within each of us is a deep and wise place, a part of us that KNOWS

As we continue through this year of so much fire and air (fire horse energy!) it's so important that we return to what anchors us, so that we move with clarity and alignment in the direction of what is truly for us.

This is a dance to anchor into your deep truth,

The ancient wisdom of your bones,

The power of presence,

And the strength to move forward, even if the whole path is not yet revealed.

When we return to the dance, we anchor back in.

This is a call to return to the dance.
