POV: you’re an undercover camera on a Taranaki reef… 👀

This is what Project Reef Life - South Taranaki's underwater “spy camera” sees when no one’s watching.

📍 Deployed 11km offshore at 25m depth, this in-situ system quietly records reef life day and night off the South Taranaki coast.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite moments, from curious fish to nocturnal hunters, and the occasional… suspicious visitor 🐙

Footage like this, collected over nearly a decade, is helping us build a clearer picture of how these reefs function, from daily rhythms to long-term changes beneath the surface.

🔎 If you’re curious to see the tech up close, we currently have our V1 “spy cam” work on display at Puke Ariki Museum, Level 2.

As always, a massive thanks to South Taranaki Coastguard for your watch as we undertake these deployments offshore.

🪸 You’ll find us on page 50… diving into a decade of documenting life offshore of South Taranaki!! The piece touches on how we’ve been using in-situ cameras and diver surveys to better understand what’s happening offshore of this region.

A massive thanks to Kerrie Waterworth for covering our mahi so thoughtfully.

The Autumn issue is out now in print and online, packed with conservation stories from across Aotearoa. Have you read it yet? Drop us a comment below and let us know what you think!

☀️ Early this morning South Taranaki Underwater Club - DiveClub & project team members Bec & Bruce travelled 11km offshore from Pātea to retrieve our spy camera!

📸 This in-situ camera unit has been sitting at the Project Reef over the past few days, recording short clips across both day and night.

🐠 From what we saw during retrieval, the reef was particularly active… with large numbers of leatherjackets moving through, alongside blue cod, blue and copper moki, scarlet wrasse and tarakihi.

🤿 Vis was moderate to low, but sea conditions were exceptionally calm and glassy.

🕵️ We’re now looking forward to reviewing the footage to better understand what’s been happening on the reef, especially how species use this space across day and night. Findings to come!

🤿 Massive thanks to our wonderful skipper Dennis and as always, South Taranaki Coastguard Coastguard Taranaki, for your watch.
