Tū Mai Taonga

Tū Mai Taonga Tū Mai Taonga is an iwi-led pest control project of Ngāti Rehua–Ngātiwai ki Aotea, restoring the mauri of our whenua.

Through predator control and habitat restoration, we help regenerate the ngahere and support the return of taonga species. The Tū Mai Taonga Project is proceeding under the leadership, guiding vision, and tikanga of Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea. The project aims to protect and restore native species and ecosystems through feral cat removal and intensified rat control, initially in the Aotea Conse

rvation Park and Northern Aotea area. It plans to prove landscape-scale operational methodologies and build community support that open pathways to a predator free Aotea.

A critically endangered native bird is making a remarkable comeback in Canterbury, with recent conservation monitoring revealing zero rats detected in a key Arthur’s Pass habitat.

All cat owners are welcome to join the Tū Mai Taonga team of Ngāti Rehua - Ngātiwai ki Aotea Trust Board, for a drink, some nibbles and a friendly convo about how to keep your companion cat safe as feral cat trapping efforts increase around the motu.

You will be able to hear about the Aotea Cat-alogue and our dedicated CAT TAXI which will be running during July. This taxi is being decorated by the school children of Aotea and can take the hassle out of getting your precious companion cat/s de-sexed (and microchipped if you wish). There will also be Island store vouchers available to those who have their cat de-sexed next month.

This is also a great opportunity to meet some of our team and find out more about how we are working with other trapping groups to deliver the community-wide Safe Cat program.

See you at your local club and please pass this message on to those you know with companion cats.
