Incinerator madness strikes again! This time in Te Awamutu! We are supporting our friends to oppose yet another application in another small town!

He piko, he taniwha, he piko, he taniwha. It's Val here in the mighty Waikato (Kirikiriroa/Hamilton) to kick off the Zero Waste Network/Environmental Defence Society case to stop the building of a massive incinerator in Te Awamutu. Mihi nui ki Te Kīngitanga, ara ko Te Arikinui Kuīni Ngā Wai Hono i te Pō i runga i te whenua, me tōnā matua, King Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII kua wheturangi.

We've got amazing lawyers Dhilum Nightingale, Sarah Ongley and John Commissaris from the Environmental Defence Society presenting to the Board of Inquiry along with a line up of excellent expert witnesses (see our main man Steve Goldthorpe) to make our case crystal clear: waste incinerators do not fit with a waste-free future. They lock us into producing waste forever because you have to keep feeding the beast. We'll be posting regular updates from the hearings on our new campaign website: https://www.incineratorfree.nz/

Please sign this new petition. Today the Te Awamutu Incinerator proposal hearing starts. Let's stop these time-wasting proposals at the get-go.

On the eve of a major Board of Inquiry that will assess if a large-scale rubbish incinerator proposed for Te Awamutu can go ahead, the Zero Waste Network and allies are launching a new petition to keep the country incinerator-free. Join us to oppose incineration: for our health, for our climate, for a zero waste future.

Australia is now the first continent in the world to implement container deposit return schemes, in every state or territory!
South Australia pioneered its Container Deposit Return Scheme (CDRS) in 1977, and since then, every state and territory has followed suit—Northern Territory (2011), New South Wales (2017), Australian Capital Territory (2018), Queensland (2018), Western Australia (2020), Victoria (2023), and now Tasmania in 2025.
As of 1 May 2025, Tasmania’s scheme has officially launched. With this final addition, Australia is now fully covered by refund programs that incentivise recycling and reduce litter.
This milestone marks Australia as the first continent in the world to achieve complete CDRS implementation.

Bioplant attempts to strike again! This time on the East Coast. They originally had their Tairawhiti plant on the fast track schedule 2 list. See this just released piece on Newsroom:

A good reminder to keep our eyes and ears out for any developments.

A year after the information was requested, pressure from the Ombudsman has forced the Ministry for the Environment to reveal the 97 ministerial nominations. Fox Meyer reports.
