The Coal Island seabird project has officially begun!
The Mohua Charitable Trust in partnership with the Coal Island Trust (South West New Zealand Endangered Species Trust) and sponsors: DoC Community Fund, ANZ Staff Foundation and Fiordland Helicopters have made this exciting project happen.
The aim is to attract seabirds which would have nested on the island pre rats and stoats with specially designed acoustic call gear.
The heavy gear was flown into position by Heli My Way pilot Dale Green with the help of Pete Young from the Coal Island Trust last week. A team of volunteers then set them up.
The acoustic call gear was designed and constructed by the DOC electronics team, and the calls of titi/mutton birds and korure/mottled petrels loaded onto the machines by seabird expert from Te Papa, Colin Miskelly.
Now all we need to do is wait....

Guess what? We are gearing up to set up special acoustic equipment on Coal Island in Preservation Inlet, Fiordland to attract several species of special seabirds to once again breed on the island. This project is a great example of two trusts working together: the South-West New Zealand Endangered Species Trust (otherwise known as Coal Island Trust) and the Mohua Charitable Trust...together with funding support from the Department of Conservation's Community Fund and the ANZ Staff Foundation. Will keep you posted....

2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Mohua Charitable Trust. We have several upcoming projects - two are working with the Coal Island Trust, the ANZ Staff Foundation and the Department of Conservation restoring seabirds and saddlebacks to Coal Island Preservation Inlet, Fiordland. There will also be a translocation or two later in the year to directly benefit mohua conservation. We will keep you in the loop!
