Save The Arts Centre Chch City Council has proposed a plan that doesn’t include funding for The Arts Centre. The Arts Centre is a taonga of our city.

This campaign is funded by a donor, & supported by creative, print & media partners. On March 15 2024, the Christchurch City Council released their Long Term Plan for Ōtautahi. For the first time ever, this included zero funding for The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. This means The Arts Centre Trust (who currently manage the precinct) will be heading towards insolvency. In time, following a lengthy legal process at the expense of the taxpayer, management would inevitably be handed to the Council – spelling the end of The Arts Centre as we know it. Council have suggested the space be run as a property management business, and we “stop doing the arts”. It’s the only space of its kind in Aotearoa. It’s a thriving hub for creativity, makers, events and festivals, local food and w**e, entertainment, indigenous creatives, and opportunities for learning. If there’s one thing we know about the Christchurch community, is that we rally together when it matters! We now have a short window until 21 April to publicly appeal the Council’s proposal. This is a crucial moment to collectively make our voice heard – Council will listen if we’re loud enough! Thank you again for your support.

We are immensely grateful to Council, to the ratepayers, and to all those who wrote submissions so we can receive funding in the Council’s Long Term Plan.

Hard decisions will need to be made to reflect the level of Council funding we're receiving, as it won’t meet all of the bills for this next year, but with your help, we want to continue to offer those things that you love at The Arts Centre.

During the campaign, people also asked how they could support The Arts Centre financially.

If you have the means, and are interested in supporting us, we would appreciate your donation – this could be one-off, regular or by leaving a gift in your Will.

Support comes in many forms, and you may wish to consider other options such as in-kind support, becoming a volunteer, spreading the word and introducing your friends to the many delights at The Arts Centre.

We gave it our best shot.

Christchurch City Councillors have made their decision. In the Long Term Plan that comes into force on 1 July, the Council has allocated us $750,000 per year for the first two years, then $500,000 per year for the following eight years, and the continuance of the existing $110,000 Strengthening Communities for the next two years. Plus, a commitment to a review of operations to be conducted jointly by The Arts Centre and the Council.

Heartfelt thanks to all of you who wrote submissions, came to meetings, signed your names, sent messages, donated money, and lobbied in so many different ways.

This offer from the Council is less than we need, but it is enough to sustain us in the short-term. The Arts Centre Trust is going to take some time to consider what’s next.

Are you free this Thursday afternoon? We’re one of the first up to share our verbal submission with Council.

We’ll be talking with councillors and explaining why we need funding, rolling out our scroll of support (thanks for all your signatures), and answering any questions.

Come and show the councillors how much you value The Arts Centre. Feel free to create a DIY placard for impact too!

Team. The biggest THANK YOU! Submissions have now officially closed – and we’ve heard there have been thousands through to Council in the support of The Arts Centre. We couldn’t have done this without your energy – every share, every comment, every amazing photo you sent in. You’ve made a huge impact and we’re beyond grateful for your support.

From here, we’ll be making a verbal submission to Council in May (you bet we’ll be bringing our scroll with all your hundreds of signatures!). Then, Council will make the decisions they see fit, and announce the final Long Term Plan in June 2024. The Plan will take effect from the beginning of July.
 
Between now and then, the most impactful thing you can do is talk to Councillors! If you have a friend or whānau member who is a Councillor, chat to them about The Arts Centre. You can find out more in the link in our bio.
