Interested in a career in health?

Applications are open for the University of Otago's REACH (Realising Educational Aspirations for Careers in Health) Scholarship Programme.

This exciting opportunity supports up to 20 Māori Year 13 students from around Aotearoa to spend three nights and days on the University of Otago campus in Dunedin, exploring health-related study pathways and experiencing university life firsthand.

The scholarship covers:
Flights
Accommodation
Meals
Activities and campus experiences

Students will have the chance to attend lectures, visit residential colleges, meet current Otago students, and learn more about the wide range of health study options available at Otago.

The main requirement is an interest in pursuing a career in health. While studying science subjects at Levels 2 and 3, and involvement or interest in Te Ao Māori, will strengthen an application, all students with aspirations in health are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications close: 10 June 2026
Programme dates: 3–6 August 2026

The MEG (Moriori Ethnobotanical Garden), connected to the Henga Scenic Reserve, has been buzzing this week as our latest planting crew work toward some ambitious planting goals 🌱

Over the next fortnight, more than 11,500 seedlings will go into the ground as part of the second-to-last planting season for our One Billion Trees project.

The impact of ‘recloaking Rēkohu’ is already becoming visible, with earlier plantings in the north of the island thriving and transforming the landscape. In the years ahead, we look forward to these spaces sheltering and sustaining even more native wildlife, and once again humming with life. 🐦🌿

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Ajay Peni Ataera

Ahead of the release of Hokomenetai on Friday 1 May — a modern collection of traditional Moriori rongo (music) and karakī (prayers/incantations) — we sat down with artist Ajay Peni Ataera to go a little deeper behind the music.

Q: Tell us (in a nutshell) what this album is about:
A: This album is a journey from creation to identity, grounded in the core values that define us as a imi. Hokomenetai means “to gather in peace.” It reflects the sacrifices of our karāpuna (ancestors) and calls on us, as future holders of this culture, to move forward with integrity — protecting what matters for the next generation.

Q: How would you describe the sound or feeling of this project in three words?
A: Gentle. Introspective. Foundational.

Q: What does creating Moriori rongo and karakī mean to you personally?
A: For me, it’s about legacy — creating a strong foundation of meaningful art for the next generation. Doing this for my culture and place feels like working toward something bigger than myself. It’s like planting trees my son will one day benefit from.

Q: How does Rēkohu influence your sound or storytelling?
A: Deeply — it always has. The landscape, the weather, the isolation, the people — it all shapes my work. Rongo takes that connection even deeper.

Q: What role does language and sound play in your work?
A: With rongo, language is the foundation. Sound brings the colour and the feeling.
