It's been an exciting few weeks on our first pilot project with Te Huarahi Linwood Avenue School.

We're learning so much from co-designing with the tamariki. Their ideas and insights are inspiring!

The project is already shaping up to be bigger, better and more time-intensive than we imagined.

This means we need to spend more time with the children and also invest more pūtea in this kaupapa than initially anticipated. This is a discovery to be expected on our first pilot as Gather Foundation.

We had planned to deliver projects with three schools this year, however to make sure we give each kaupapa the time and space it deserves, we have had a kōrero with our school partners and moved one project out to 2024. This means we will be in a better position to resource all three projects and deliver for our visionary tamariki.

We are grateful to our partners and funders for supporting Gather Foundation and the tamariki and communities we serve, as we navigate our pilot phase and continue to learn from the next generation.

Rā tuatoru (Day 3) - Place Cadets with tamariki at Linwood Avenue School! ✨

The children were super excited to get started - turning their sketches into 3D ... making models with cardboard, tape and sticks.

Tamariki worked in pairs to create their models, discovering that they shared a love of hiding places, bases, tunnels, slides, places to climb, jump, use their imagination and spaces of challenge.

At the end of the session, each child explained the most important elements of their model so everyone could hear the intent behind their design.

We’re thrilled to see the children’s commitment to this project, and their genuine interest in each other’s work towards our shared goal.

Day 2 with the imaginative Year 1 and 2 tamariki from Te Huarahi Linwood Avenue School!

We discussed the school's name - Te Huarahi, which recognises its location along a traditional Ngāi Tahu pathway connecting Ōtautahi and Te Ihutai, the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

Next, we explored an aerial map of the children’s outdoor play area and invited them to point out their favourite spots and what they liked most about them.

Finally, we encouraged the tamariki to unleash their creativity and draw their ideal outdoor play area. It was a valuable session which provided us with important insights into the children’s preferences for outdoor play.

Day One with tamariki at Linwood Avenue School was an action packed hour!

We had a great time soaking up the sun and chatting with the children about their outdoor play area.

We encouraged them to pay close attention to the surfaces, edges, objects and spaces around them - the places they like to play and move about in. This gave us valuable insights into how they play, what might be missing and what they’d like to create.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with these creative children to develop meaningful learning opportunities.

Keep an eye out for updates on our Place Cadets journey!

We've started our first 2023 Place Cadets project! ✨

Last week we met with Kristine, Team Leader and Year 1-2 teacher at Te Huarahi Linwood Avenue School. We’re using the school’s recently gifted cultural narrative to weave the rich cultural stories of the area through both design process and outcome.

Te Huarahi means The Pathway, recognising the school’s location along a traditional Ngāi Tahu trail between Ōtautahi and Te Ihutai The Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

We’re working closely with Kristine to integrate tamariki’s learning this term with the design of their outdoor play spaces. They’ll be learning about their place in this takiwā… their tūrangawaewae, which are places where we feel empowered and connected. Tūrangawaewae are our foundation, our place in the world and our home.

We couldn’t think of a more appropriate kaupapa for these Year 1 and 2 tamariki, as they shape the design of their outdoor play area 💚

Our team is growing! We’re delighted to welcome Isabella Cobb to Gather Foundation as our new Communications Advisor.

Isabella is studying towards a Master’s in Strategic Communications at the University of Canterbury. However, when she’s not studying you can find her volunteering, reading a book, working on her art business or voice acting.

Isabella will be assisting Landscape Architect Wendy Hoddinott over the next few months, as we begin our 3 co-design projects in schools. Starting in February, Te Huarahi Linwood Avenue School is first up, before Te Kura o Mōkihi Spreydon and Te Kōmanawa Rowley Schools.

We're looking forward to working with these creative tamariki! 💫

Announcing Gather Foundation partner schools for 2023 ✨

Over the past few months, we've heard from seven Ōtautahi primary schools keen to partner with us in the co-design of new outdoor spaces.

We're thrilled to finally announce our three partner schools for 2023! They are:

▫ Linwood Avenue School
▫ Te Kura o Mōkihi Spreydon School
▫ Te Kōmanawa Rowley School

Congratulations to these wonderful schools! We're so looking forward to working with you!

Thanks also, to the principals and teachers from each school who contacted us and shared enthusiasm for this kaupapa. It was so very hard to narrow our selection to just three schools. To those that missed out, we'll keep in touch with opportunities for 2024.

We received a happy surprise recently! The Todd Foundation who are supporting Match Te Puna Taurite, a new fund-seeking platform, approached us with funds towards our 2023 projects.

The Todd Foundation are big on supporting community-led development and the opportunity to support tamariki to play an active role in shaping their community really stood out to them. They told us that they hope this becomes the norm!

We're super heartened to receive this unprompted gift and look forward to putting this generous donation to good use!

A big thank you to our latest project funder, Rātā Foundation.

Rātā Foundation is the South Island’s largest philanthropic funder, supporting people who need support now, while helping to build a better future where communities thrive.

We align with many of Rātā’s values, which include improving wellbeing by removing barriers to children’s participation in the design of their neighbourhood spaces.

Rātā are assisting us with funding towards one of our three partner school projects next year. Thank you Rātā! You're helping us achieve our vision of an Aotearoa where every child and young person has an impact on the design of their community.

We'll be announcing our three 2023 partner schools before the end of October!

In the meantime, we're looking for further sponsorship for these projects, so please be in touch if you or someone you know might be interested in learning more about how to support our mahi.
