Many people come back from the Christmas break with thoughts of change. Jennie Miller, CDANZ Executive Director, was interviewed by Jesse Mulligan on his RNZ show this afternoon. Listen to Jennie's take on how to identify what's important in your career, and thoughts on upskilling, job search and ageism.

A qualified and experienced career practitioner will have the tools to help you navigate what can be a tricky path, no matter what your age and stage. Members of CDANZ - Career Development Association of New Zealand work hard to ensure we have the skills, tools, and up-to-date knowledge to support our clients.

Most of us have been back at work for a couple of weeks now and some of you might be realising your job is no longer sparking joy. In fact, according to our next guest, three quarters of us would change careers if we felt we could. It's easy to come up with reasons not to take the plunge - but what....

We were approached late last year for an interview with an RNZ Digital Reporter on CV's and interviews, given that a big feature of any recessionary period is higher unemployment and an increased demand for fewer jobs. Applicant numbers are high and recruiters are working harder to find the best fit for the roles available. Our own Jennie Miller contributed to the resultant article, and although somewhat misquoted here and there, and the wrong research cited, this is a good read overall.

To career practitioners out there of all stripes, we are planning a series of highly informative webinars on the broader topic of job search this year, so keep your eye out for those! They will be chock full of up-to-date information and tips so you can best help the people you're supporting with whatever job search challenge they are facing.

With unemployment rising and some seasonal work shrinking, job seekers are working harder to stand out. Here's what the experts recommend.

We are proud to support and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week).

Born of activism, the week grew from a single ‘Māori Language Day’ set up in 1972. The seeds of a full week dedicated to te reo Māori were planted in 1974. By 1975 Te Wiki had found its footing and was off! Its growth and gains are what we celebrate 50 years on.

Te Wiki takes place from 14 – 20 September 2025. Go to reomaori.co.nz to get involved, not just this week, but all year round! There are loads of resources and information to help you on your reo journey.

Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui. Be strong, be brave, be steadfast.

🥳 🎉 As of August, CDANZ is now governed by a Board (rather than a National Executive Committee), and recently we voted in a Chair and Deputy Chair at our first meeting. Please welcome Shane Heasley as our new CDANZ Chair and Hilary Tomkins, Deputy Chair. Some of you will recall Shane was our President back in 2017, so know we are in safe hands. Hilary enjoys being in support as she manages a busy work and home life.

We also welcomed three new Board members to the fold, who we are thrilled will be joining us as we seek to build the capability of all New Zealanders to thrive in their careers. They are: Fiona Timoti-Knowles, Annemarie Mead, and Chloe Boreham.

We congratulate Jennie Miller who has been appointed Executive Director, formalising and extending her part-time role managing our operations. In the membership space she continues to be supported by our great team of contractors and volunteers.

Cherie Perrow, our past President, can now take a well-deserved rest from a demanding period in the life of our association. And Esther Harvey, co-opted during the year, stays on - it's great to have her governance wisdom and commitment to the Education sector.

We are excited by what the next year will bring with so much energy for career development in the room! 😍

At the first meeting of the new CDANZ Board on Friday 29 August, L-R: Chloe Boreham (Northland), Cherie Perrow (Auckland), Shane Heasley (BoP), Jennie Miller (Auckland), Hilary Tomkins (BoP), Fiona Timoti-Knowles (Northland), Ann-Marie Mead (Wellington), Esther Harvey (Auckland). Absent: Adrienne Heath (Wellington)
