Tiaki Maniototo

Tiaki Maniototo The Upper Taiari, in the Māniatoto, is one of New Zealand's most unique landscapes.

Tiaki Maniototo was funded by the Ministry for Environment Freshwater Fund in 2021 with the acknowledgement that intensification of agriculture in the Māniatoto area, combined with historic activities and the incursion of introduced plant species, has contributed to the degradation of water quality and the loss of wetlands and biodiversity in this catchment. Our mandate is to preserve, protect and

enhance water quality, recreational, cultural, biodiversity and economic values in the Upper Taiari. This is to be achieved through riparian fencing, planting, pest control and the development of a catchment management plan in consultation with farmers, Fish and Game, Herenga ā Nuku, the Department of Conservation and the Maniototo Irrigation Company.

If you’ve been a landowner involved in our planting project, we would really like to hear from you!

We’ve put together a very short, multi-choice survey about what has worked or maybe hasn’t worked at your planting sites. This will take less than five minutes to complete.

You can access the survey here:

This survey is also part of our Project Manager, Caitlin Daley’s, PhD research at the University of Otago, but your responses remain anonymous and you are welcome to skip any questions you would prefer not to answer.

Sally Andrews of Riverslea and Tiaki Maniototo project Manager Caitlin Daley were interviewed by Kathryn Ryan on Radio New Zealand's Nine to Noon show about the rediscovery of the Australasian bittern in the area. Great work team! Huge thanks to Regional Council and Birds New Zealand for running / supporting this project! Lots of hard work to gather really valuable data.

Farmer says confirmation that critically endangered Australasian bittern were living at the bottom of her farm was better than winning Lotto.

Amazing what two photos, one year apart, can show. These Carex secta (the orange, grass-like plants) will soon be tall and dense enough to shade the waterway.

That shade is powerful. They will quickly reduce the growth of stream weeds (exotic grasses) and other macrophytes (large aquatic plants). These clog up the channel, trap sediment and organic matter, and even push water levels up by slowing the flow.

Small plants — big impact!
