Mt Hutt's long-awaited ski season could be delayed, with hopes of opening this weekend fading fast.

After producing more than 5,000mยณ of snow in a 12-hour snowmaking push, strong westerly winds and warmer temperatures have stalled progress. Ski field operators say they still need at least three more full days of snowmaking and a 30cm base before opening can go ahead.

While skiers and snowboarders may be disappointed, there is still some hope. Forecasts suggest colder weather could arrive next week, giving crews another chance to build the snow base needed to welcome visitors back to the slopes.

A major proposal to protect South Dunedin from future flooding could dramatically transform the community, with between 1,100 and 1,700 properties potentially acquired over the coming decades.

Officials say action is needed to safeguard the low-lying suburb, which has been hit by severe floods in recent years. The preferred $1.6 billion plan would create new wetlands, waterways, canals and green spaces designed to reduce flood risk for thousands of residents.
