Huge Steam Plume Seen Above Whakaari/White Island — GeoNet Confirms No Eruption

Residents along the Bay of Plenty coast were surprised to see a huge plume rising above Whakaari/White Island on Saturday morning.

A couple in Ōhope told they spotted a “huge” plume around 8.30am. Although it has since reduced in size, it remains significant.

However, GeoNet has confirmed that no eruption has been observed.

GeoNet volcano duty officer said the plume was caused by ongoing low to moderate steam emissions from the active vent, combined with current weather conditions.

Whakaari remains at Volcanic Alert Level 2, indicating moderate to heightened volcanic unrest. The volcano erupted in 2019.

28°C HEAT AND A POSSIBLE SNOW SURPRISE FOR NEW ZEALAND!

New Zealand is in for a mixed bag of weather next week, with summer-like temperatures on the way for parts of the South Island — but a colder, unsettled turn could follow.

MetService meteorologist says warm air streaming down from the tropics could push Ashburton to 28°C, while Christchurch could reach 26°C on Wednesday. Hastings is also tipped to climb to 27°C.

But don't put away the raincoats just yet! Northerly and southerly winds are expected to clash, bringing rain across the country and even the possibility of a dusting of snow in some areas.

A band of rain is forecast to cross the South Island on Wednesday before moving over the North Island on Thursday, with a low developing in the Tasman Sea.

The first days of the school holidays' return to term four look relatively settled, but conditions could become much more changeable as the week progresses.

Magnitude 4.1 Earthquake Rattles Near Taumarunui as 500+ People Report Shaking

A sudden early-morning shake has rattled the central North Island, with more than 500 people reporting that they felt an earthquake near Taumarunui. 🇳🇿

According to GeoNet, the magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 2:57am on Friday, October 9, about 10km south of Taumarunui, at a depth of 7.1km.

- Lake Wakatipu Fire Grows to 1,400ha as Strong Winds Threaten Firefighting Efforts -

A large vegetation fire above Lake Wakatipu has grown to an estimated 1,400 hectares, with the blaze still uncontained and dynamic, according to Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

Five helicopters with monsoon buckets are tackling the most active fire edges, while ground crews are working around Walter Peak to protect the homestead and strengthen containment lines.

Conditions could become more challenging as strong to gale-force northerly winds are forecast across the Southern Lakes.

Firefighting aircraft will stand down overnight for safety, with crews remaining on the ground to monitor the fire and operations resuming at first light.

FENZ says no homes or buildings have been damaged and no structures or livestock are currently assessed as being at immediate risk.

The boating public is also being asked to stay away from the Walter Peak fire area while an exclusion zone remains in place.

Tauranga Historic Village to close high-risk areas during heavy rain

Heavy rain could mean restricted access at Tauranga’s Historic Village, with high-risk areas set to close during and after severe rainfall.

The 5.5ha site has been divided into high-risk, conditional-use and low-risk zones after geotechnical assessments identified areas vulnerable to instability when the ground becomes waterlogged.

The high-risk areas include steep slopes, signs of ground movement, seepage and retaining structures showing movement. Public access is banned in these zones.

The response plan will be activated during Orange and Red rain warnings, while other parts of the village may face restrictions after prolonged or heavy rain.

For locals and visitors, the message is simple: when the rain gets heavy, stay away from unstable slopes and follow closure advice

School Holiday Sunshine: Temperatures Set to Hit the 20s Across NZ !

Good news for the school holidays — a mostly settled week is shaping up across Aotearoa, with temperatures climbing into the low 20s in several areas.

Alexandra could reach 21°C, while Canterbury and eastern Otago are heading into the 20s. Hamilton may reach 22°C later in the week.

But it won’t be sunshine everywhere. Parts of the North Island, including Masterton, Napier and Taupō, face another frosty start, with severe frost possible around the central high country.

Meanwhile, Fiordland and southern Westland could see periods of rain, with some heavy falls possible.

New Zealand could be in for a very different summer Due to El Niño !

One of the strongest El Niño events on record may be developing, with conditions expected to strengthen into late spring and early summer. As NIWA weather forecast El Niño has not peaked yet. Their forecast indicates it'll be around through early 2027

For Aotearoa, that could mean more westerly winds, warmer temperatures and longer dry spells across parts of the North Island and eastern New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the West Coast, Southern Alps, inland Otago and Southland are leaning wetter, with the potential for periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

The big message from forecasters: don’t expect every day to follow the pattern. El Niño can bring bigger swings, with warm spells followed by sudden cooler changes.

FROST RISK RETURNS AS COLD SNAP SWEEPS ACROSS NEW ZEALAND

A sharp spring chill is sweeping across Aotearoa, with some parts of the country running 4–5°C colder than normal and frosty mornings on the way.

The coldest conditions are expected across parts of the South Island and eastern North Island. Christchurch could drop to around 1°C, while Timaru and Alexandra may reach about 2°C.

Growers are keeping a close eye on the forecast, with vineyards and orchards already in bud burst. Wairarapa could dip to around -1°C on Monday morning, with frost also possible around Rotorua and sheltered parts of Hawke’s Bay.

Twizel Drops to -2°C as Cold Mornings Spread North !

It’s a seriously frosty start for many parts of New Zealand, with Twizel dropping to a chilly -2°C overnight.

Frosts have also settled across inland parts of the South Island and central North Island, with some areas waking to icy conditions and crisp, clear skies.

According to Metservice A strengthening high-pressure system is now moving across the country, clearing showers from the north and east and setting up a mostly fine start to Monday and Tuesday.

But don’t pack away the winter gear just yet — frosts could reach as far north as Waikato over the coming mornings.
